Where many MCs of the time developed their technique through improvisational battles, Rakim was among the first to demonstrate the possibilities of sitting down to write intricately crafted lyrics packed with clever word choices and metaphors (of course, he also had the delivery to articulate them). Even after his innovations were worshipfully absorbed and expanded upon by countless MCs who followed, Rakim’s early work still sounds startlingly fresh, and his comeback recordings (beginning in the late ’90s) only added to his legend.

Let’s not be hasty and get crazy there’s only one the the only lyrically clever to maneuver this tongue to cheek verse I spit. With respect the only choice that makes any of this relevant it’s not a contest or is it. Everyone wins if I could only just get tickets to get in…

I hope to win this. Your website thinks I am spam.

    The masta,
    whose rhymes surpass ya,
at the Crystal Ballroom, do I even need to ask ya?

When they turn down the lights,
    and Rakim touches the mic,
the bass hits and I’m in a state of delight.

First things first, though, gotta win the tix
to quench my lyrical thirst and get my hip-hop fix

so I’ll wait patiently and see what happens next
as my luck flows through the pipeline and back to PDX

Saw Rakim perform Paid in Full at Rock the Bells in 2010, which was 23 years after its release and it would be a full circle moment to see the 25th anniversary tour celebrating The 18th Letter! Please and thank you!

Growing up in Hawaii we never got that many big name artists to perform live. Now living in a bigger city and having the opportunity to see some of the artists that I grew up listening to has been awesome. Wouldn’t want to miss this show.

I want to go because I’ve been a fan of the Ra since I was a kid and never thought I’d see him live. He’s one of the best of all time, and I’d love the chance to relive part of my childhood by seeing him in concert.
