Dynamic Geological History of the Columbia Gorge: Tale of Two Floods with Scott Burns, PhD, Professor of Geology at Portland State University

One of our local treasures is the beautiful Columbia Gorge, which is so loved that it has become a national scenic area. Professor Scott Burns of Portland State has been working in the Gorge for 30 years and will summarize how Mother Nature has formed this wonderful treasure! First, the incredible basaltic magma floods formed a majority of the bedrock in the Gorge. Then, the great Missoula Floods carved the magnificent Gorge in addition to the work of the Columbia River over many millennia! Today, many landslides continue to change the landscape of the Gorge and its beauty. Waterfalls are prominent – how were they formed. Join Scott in celebrating our beautiful neighbor!

Science Pub Portland – Virtual Edition is a weekly event that is open to anyone and everyone – no scientific background required. Just bring your curiosity, sense of humor, and appetite for knowledge!
