In the twenty-five years since eclectic improv-rock band Umphrey’s McGee formed, their sound has been an amalgamation of genres, moods, and tempos, effortlessly flowing from one feeling to the next throughout an album or concert-or sometimes within a singular song. But with time and repetition comes wisdom and maturity, both personally and musically, and in the case of the band’s new album Asking For A Friend, Umphrey’s McGee entered the recording studio with something to say and a wise, measured way to say it.

The end result is an astoundingly cohesive fourteen-song album that feels like a fresh statement from a group of world-class musicians and friends reapproaching their craft with a new lens. But long-time fans will be happy to know that the Umphrey’s McGee they know and love is still very much present on Asking For A Friend, just more refined. More focused.

Umphreys is amazing! We have been seeing them in Portland every year since 2015!
Unfortunately funds are extremely tight this year coming in hot on the heels after a 10 year anniversary with my girlfriend on March 8th.
Hoping to make it to UM show #70 by seeing them at the Crystal!

When I was a child, I was brought before a doctor, on suspicion of having some malaise or latent illness. My parents, kind though they were, were sadly inept at recognizing the condition I was in, and unfortunately the doctor was no better. I was tossed around, hospital to hospital, inpatient, outpatient, constantly seeking reprieve from the feverish delirium that was my woefully inadequate childhood.

Throughout my latter teens I began suspecting that the disease that had left me so bereft of life was not one for which modern western medicine had a cure. I began seeking answers elsewhere. In the highest reaches of the Himalayas I consulted a Nepalese man who was said to have touched the unknowable. He had not the answers I sought. To the deepest reaches of Tibet I probed, sitting long in consultation with the attendants of the Dali Llama, who again were stymied. From tip to tail I traveled this wide world, searching a cure for the malaise in my heart, but to no avail.

And then, Umphrey’s arrived. Stasik’s rock hard athletic stance, Mirro’s meticulous taps, Brendan’s cool calm demeanor, while tearing the everloving soul out of that guitar. The power. The prestige. That’s when I finally realized. What had left me bedridden and ill, what had plagued me from birth, this retched, uncomfortable affliction.. It was not a disease. It was a fever. And the only cure is more Umphrey’s. Thank you.
