George Clinton is one of the foremost innovators of funk music, and was the mastermind behind the bands Parliament and Funkadelic. Clinton was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 with 15 other members of Parliament-Funkadelic.
Clinton started his career with the Parliaments, a barbershop doo-wop ensemble, which scored a major hit with “I Wanna Testify” in 1967. Clinton then began experimenting with harmonies, melody, and rhythm, and taking cues from the psychedelic movement, forever setting himself apart from the Motown era.
By the early 1970s, the group’s tight songs evolved into sprawling jams around funky rhythms. They dropped the “s” from the band name and Parliament was born. Around the same time, Clinton spawned Funkadelic, a rock group which fused psychedelic guitar distortion, bizarre sound effects, and cosmological rants with danceable beats and booming bass lines. Funkadelic recorded a number of influential concept albums, including Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow, Maggot Brain, and America Eats Its Young.
Parliament and Funkadelic captured 40 hit R&B singles, including No. 1 hits “Flashlight,” “One Nation Under a Groove,” “Aqua Boogie,” and “(Not Just) Knee Deep.” Clinton’s collaborators included keyboardist Bernie Worrell, guitarist Eddie Hazel, bassist Bootsy Collins, saxophonist Maceo Parker, trombonist Fred Wesley. On stage, spectacle ruled the day, with an enormous mothership, outrageous costumes, and marathon performances.
In the 1980s, Clinton emerged as a successful solo artist. He released Computer Games with the No. 1 hit single “Atomic Dog,” produced the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ pioneering Freaky Styley, and signed with Prince’s Paisley Park label. He also began to experiment with the urban hip-hop music scene, as a generation of rappers reared on P-Funk began to name-check him.
Clinton has become recognized as the godfather of modern urban music. Beats, loops, and samples of P-Funk have appeared on albums by OutKast, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot, De La Soul, Fishbone, and many others. As Clinton has said, “funk is the DNA of hip-hop and rap.” In 1996, Clinton released the solo album The Awesome Power of a Fully Operational Mothership, which reunited him with Bernie Worrell and Bootsy Collins.
Sounds like it would be a great show.
I’ve never seen the group and have always to. What a fantastic and fun evening of music and vibes.

You had me at Dumpstaphunk!
My friend has been pretty depressed lately and this would be a great pick me up for her to attend.
I have seen a lot of shows over my 45 years and have never seen Parliament Funkadelic. I am leaving the country for a job overseas either the day after the show or the day after that. What a great way to say goodbye with some of my friends.
Get up for the downstroke, everybody get up!
Gonna tear the roof off this sucka
Amazing show experience 22 years ago. Would like to comment on the show’s evolution since then. Pick me.
I believe I saw P-Funk and The All-Stars in Ann Arbor way back when. I would love to see the funkadelicious sights and sounds again. ~ a former psychedelic ranger

ready to get funky with George
I would love to go, b/c the last show I was at was well…I watched a wookette giving birth during the 2nd set. I was just peaking on some 2ci. People were trying to get medical help, but they hadn’t arrived. Some other wookette claimed to be a midwife and was coaching the woman through this. Her wook man is standing there shirtless and spun like top, just making these weird sounds while he is crushing his beer can and spraying coors light all over everyone. He looked really anxious about the whole thing, grabbing his face and just making grunts and stuff. The baby’s head starts to crown and the medics still haven’t arrived.
This is where it gets crazy… It was so fucking dusty out there and the baby and all the surrounding fluids were immediately “muddified” by the blowing dirt. I mean, its fucking gross. All of a sudden, this fucking kid (probably 19 or 20) in his oversized neon, flat-brim LRG hat, runs up yelling “welcome to the party bitch!” before he blows a huge plume of smoke right in the baby’s face! While the umbilical cord is still attached and shit!
The smell was unmistakeable, this baby had just been deemster’d.
He must have pulled the hit from a bong, b/c it was monstrous. The surrounding crowd dropped their jaws, and someone tackled the kid as he starts to run away. He didn’t make it more than 10ft and the he was probably blasting off about now.
The mom is clutching the dirty baby and trying to calm it. Though, strangely, the baby was not crying (tripping balls i guess?). And while the dude is getting screamed at, the dad suddenly pounces into action. He jumps on the dude, and starts smashing said bisco kid’s face with the crushed up beer can, of which he seemingly just can’t let go. The bisco kid is kicking and trying to roll out of it and the wook-dad grabs the kid’s hair w/ one hand. he finally let the can go and shoves his other hand half way inside the guys mouth. He is pulling his mouth open and RIPS HIS CHEEK OPEN! repeat: rips his fucking CHEEK OPEN!
there is blood everywhere and the dude lets out this braveheart-like scream as he gets pulled off by the folks around him. Blood all over bisco kid’s face, shirt and formerly fresh flat breezy. The cops/medics arrived about that time and took over the situation.
Shit was crazy as hell.
Would love a second chance to finish a whole show without a birth.
i would love to go!
Have always wanted to see them and not been able to!
Yes, please
It would a funkin’ dream come true to see the Grand Poobah of Funk/ Phyco-funk in person. I have enjoyed Parliament, George Clinton and the Funkadelics, P-funks as well as the cameo appearances in several motion pictures over the past 50 +years .
This sounds amazing. I’d love to take my friend to see this. 🙂
My birthday weekend 🎂
This would be completely insane. My partner and I got majorly into P-Funk this year and it would blow my little mind to go.
