The version of The Winter’s Tale that Portland Shakes is performing in July is a Play On Shakespeare modern verse translation by playwright and theatre director Tracy Young. Play On Shakespeare was created by Oregon Shakespeare in 2015 to commission 36 playwrights to translate 39 plays attributed to Shakespeare into contemporary, modern English.

The jealous King Leontes falsely accuses his wife, Hermione, of infidelity with his best friend, and she dies. Leontes exiles his newborn daughter Perdita, who is raised by shepherds for sixteen years and falls in love with the son of Leontes’ friend. When Perdita returns home, a statue of Hermione “comes to life” …
