Tab Benoit is a Grammy nominated singer, songwriter and guitarist who has built a remarkable 30+ year career on the foundation of his gritty and soulful Delta swamp blues, acquiring a devoted legion of fans along the way, as well as 5 Blues Music Awards, including BB King Entertainer of the Year (twice) and an induction into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. He has recorded and/or performed with Junior Wells, George Porter Jr, Dr. John, Willie Nelson, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Billy Joe Shaver, Maria Muldaur, James Cotton, Cyril Neville, Kenny Aronoff, Allen Toussaint, Kim Wilson, Jimmy Thackery, Charlie Musslewhite, Kenny Neal, Chris Layton, Ivan Neville, Jimmy Hall, Jim Lauderdale, Anders Osborne, and Alvin Youngblood Hart to name a few. Tab’s accomplishments as a musician are matched only by his devotion to the environmental health of his native Louisiana wetlands. Benoit is the founder and driving force behind Voice of the Wetlands, an organization working to preserve the coastal waters of his home state. In 2010, he received the Governor’s Award for Conservationist of the Year from the Louisiana Wildlife Federation. Benoit also starred in the iMax motion picture Hurricane on the Bayou, a documentary of Hurricane Katrina’s effects and a call to protect and restore the wetlands.

The Rumble

On Mardi Gras morning, your eyes may feast on the intricate and elaborate beadwork of the Indians as they dance down the street, but the first thing you’ll hear when they make their way toward you is the back line, known as “the rumble”. Featuring six Grammy-nominated musicians, The Rumble is more than just a band—it’s an opportunity to be immersed in a wholly unique facet of New Orleans culture. Composed of Second Chief Joseph Boudreaux Jr. of the Golden Eagles, trumpeter Aurélien Barnes, trombonist José Maize Jr., bassist TJ Norris, guitarist Ari Teitel, keyboardist Andriu Yanovski, and drummer Trenton O’Neal, the group fuses iconic New Orleans funk in the vein of The Meters and The Neville Brothers—but updated, modern and vibrant befitting the next generation—with electrifying brass and the singular visual splendor of the Black Masking carnival tradition.

Their live show is a symphony of rich color and propulsive sound, with each member sharing vocal duties and engaging the audience in the classic Mardi Gras Indian-style call-and-response chanting. The group pays homage to trailblazers like Wild Magnolias and Golden Eagles, both of which featured the vocal stylings of Boudreaux’s father, Monk Boudreaux. The Rumble continues the fight to preserve the legacies and traditions of the community for the next generation while bringing new layers of depth to their live performance. The Rumble provides audiences with not only a top-tier musical event, but a chance to participate in a culture that, while deeply rooted in centuries-old tradition, is thriving and evolving through the active work of this next generation of bold and passionate culture-bearers.

I know what it means to miss…New Orleans.

I lived in NOLA, but have now lived in PDX for decades. Tab is one my favorites and if y’all Arent familiar with his Voice of the Wetlands collaborations, that’s a must own.

I have loved Tab since seeing him in AL in the 90s. What an artist – so glad he’s still making music. Would love to check him out now.

Hot dog! This is the definition of blues music. I can’t wait to nod by head, tap my feet, and spin my girlfriend to some rawwwww guitar licks and groovy bass jams. Hopefully he plays that “For What It’s Worth” cover that has been DOMINATING my playlist throughout the summer.

Tab was great at the Blues Festival several years ago. Glad to see he’s coming back to Portland again. Always gives the audience his all, whether there’s 50 or 5,000 of them in attendance. Best ‘non-household name’ bluesman out there, period. It’d be nice to win free tickets but, either way, I’ll be at the Aladdin that night.

I saw Tab Benoit years back at a festival in Seattle and was so blown away by his guitar playing skills. I would love to take my wife out for a night of Blues Music and food & drinks at The Aladdin Theater a venue that for years has supported Blues Music.
