Protection Services Officer I

The Portland Art Museum and the Center for an Untold Tomorrow  invites applications for the position of Protection Services Officer I. The Protection Services Officer I (PSO I) is a member of the Protection Services team, which performs a critical role by protecting the safety of visitors, staff and Museum property. PSO’s work in various locations throughout the Museum including the lobby, control room, loading dock, Mark building, and patrolling. This role will be cross trained to work in different locations and helps adherence to the “Visitor Agreement to Safe & Inclusive Spaces”.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Acts as the first responder to disruptive persons entering the lobbies and adjacent areas
  • Interacts with visitors in a welcoming manner by assisting with wayfinding and providing information related to the Museum collection, public programs, and events
  • Safeguard Museum assets, property, equipment, and facilitates against illegal and destructive acts
  • Communicate museum policies in a respectful manner using flexibility and discretion to achieve a safe and positive outcome
  • Resolve conflict using de-escalation techniques and upholding equity and inclusion values
  • Respond and remove visitors who are trespassing or exhibit harassment, discrimination, threatening, disrespectful or hostile behaviors
  • Communicating with law enforcement, fire departments and emergency medical personnel
  • Initiating building evacuations
  • Communicates important notification functions via phone, email, radio or Alert Media
  • Document activity and write reports in a complete and concise manner
  • Issue keys and visitor badges
  • Lost and Found management
  • Opening and closing the Museum
  • Gallery inspections
  • Exterior patrols as needed
  • Responding to requests for assistance
  • Process mail and oversee shipment and deliveries


  • This role is non-exempt/hourly and full-time
  • Budgeted compensation is within pay grade C ($15.67 min – $18.02 mid – $20.37 max), depending on experience
  • Shift differentials, for hourly/non-exempt staff, for hours worked onsite within:
    • Evening hours (6:00pm-12:00am) will be paid an additional $1.00 per hour
    • Night hours (12:01am-6:00am) will be paid an additional $2.00 per hour
