Drawing on influences from Indian, jazz, and western classical traditions, Naya Baaz is a ground-breaking new collaboration featuring 2021 Guggenheim Fellow Rez Abbasi and trail-blazing sitar virtuoso Josh Feinberg. Drawn from Urdu, Naya Baaz translates as “new bird,” which embodies the innovation and freedom present in the music of this ensemble. Jennifer vincent (cello) and Satoshi Takeishi (drums) fill out the band’s sound creating a sonically rich tapestry which defies categories. The members of this group are as diverse as the music itself, which blends different perspectives, experiences and sounds to create something completely new, and utterly unique.

meroitic is a sound & movement based project of black trans non-binary interdisciplinary artist & composer jamondria harris. Their work uses words, sounds, wires, instruments, textiles & what falls into their hands to engage with blackness, desire, spirit/source, narratology/folklore, ontologies of liberation & embodiment.Their sound art emerges from deep-listening fluidity between rhythm & source, engendering sonic cartographies woven from samples, feedback, the electromagnetic field of bodies & rooms and both digital and analog synthesizer soundscapes. Their albums are available on Fallen Moon Recordings.

This looks so interesting. I’ll be honest, I’ve never heard of him but I can totally dig some sitar and love that there are “jazz and western classical” influences. This is the cool part about PDX Pipeline’s free ticket giveaways…even if I don’t win I just learned about a whole new genre of music that I most likely would’ve never came across on my own. Saaahhweeet.

Exceptional sitarist! I have enjoyed his album A Fallen Blossom in the Thorns much and will be thrilled to see him in person. This concept is inventive and I know the music will be beautiful.
