Try roller derby by signing up for the Adult Intro to Derby Series! It can be hard starting a new sport as an adult. We’re making joining roller derby easy! It’s okay if you don’t know the rules or how to skate, we’ll teach you everything you need to know, and we even provide rental skates and gear! So, are you ready to see what you can do on the track? Dive into this rad community and discover your power!
Welcome to Rose City Rollers Intro to Derby. We are so glad you are here, and we are so excited to bring in new members!
In this series, you will attend 4, 2-hour practices, learning basic skating skills with a roller derby flair. At the end of the series, you will be invited to become a member of Rose City Rollers and continue your derby journey.
Who is this program for?
Skaters who are:
- 18+ years old
- Able to stand on skates unassisted
- Get up from a fall without help
- Skaters who identify with the WFTDA Statement on Gender
The skills covered include standing and falling, stopping, and crossovers. More advanced skaters will learn backwards skating, lateral movement, and transitions (changing from forwards to backwards skating while rolling). While these are basic skating skills, they are taught through a roller derby lens and layered with light pack drills.
What you’ll need:
- Skates, Pads, Helmet – Don’t have your own? No sweat! Our gear lending library has you covered and loaners are included in your reservation for the program – just make sure to fill out your gear section of the registration. Have your own? Even better! You’ll need a low boot. High boot or in-line skates won’t work. Helmet should be rated for multi-impact. A bike helmet is not suitable for derby.
- Mouthguard – Sisu is our preferred brand because it can be remolded, We offer them for $20. We also have a non-moldable kind for $5. *SISU mouthguards will need to be picked up before the series starts, more info to come.
- Water bottle – hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
- Snacks – bring a small snack that will help give you energy. Protein bars are great.
We look forward to seeing you on the track!
