Quadriplegics United Against Dependency, Inc. (Quad) is a Portland-based 501c3 organization dedicated to advancing the rights and independence of adults living with physical disabilities through the provision of barrier-free, low-cost housing and 24/7 supportive services. Quad was founded 50 years ago in 1975 by E.W. “Bud” Myers, an appliance repairman who experienced a spinal cord injury from a diving accident in the Sandy River. Bud realized that the Portland area had no accessible housing or support services that would allow newly injured quadriplegics to adjust to their injury and become accustomed to living life with a major disability.

What Bud lacked in experience and connections, he more than made up for with his unique vision and drive to accomplish his goals. Bud was able to bring together donors, contractors, and advocates in the community and by 1980 they opened Myers Court, Quad’s original community. Myers Court received national attention for being America’s first independent living center unaffiliated with a hospital or rehabilitation center. Its pioneering, barrier-free design predated the wheelchair accessibility standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act by a decade. Since Myers Court, Quad has built four additional independent living communities throughout the Portland area.

To celebrate Quad Inc.’s 50th anniversary as an organization, we will host a 70’s-themed anniversary gala in OMSI’s Theory Room on the evening of October 18, 2025. Our gala is a night for our community including Quad staff, residents, local businesses, and community leaders to gather and join us in celebration. We expect a guest list of over one hundred individuals, a social cocktail hour, dinner, presentations, silent and live auctions.
