Join Portland Youth Philharmonic for Russian Winter: a celebration of Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev with a special performance by 2021 Portland Piano International Concerto Competition Winner, Michael Gu.

Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, a symphonic giant, is equal in its beauty and emotional complexity. Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 1, which will feature Mr. Gu on piano, begins with a triumphant fanfare, leading into a dreamy world of mystery. PYP’s Musical Director, David Hattner, conducts this Philharmonic Orchestra program, which also includes William Grant Still’s Threnody: In Memory of Jan Sibelius.

The evening will open with PYP’s String Ensemble, conducted by Inés Voglar Belgique, performing works by Tatev Amiryan and Kayla Orozco, which were written as part of the Youth Orchestra Commissioning Initiative.

PYP requires proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 or a negativeCOVID-19 test, within 72 hours, to attend performances in-person. All people ages 5 and up are required to wear a mask while in the venue. PYP is also implementing socially-distanced seating. Learn more at portlandyouthphil.org.
