The Portland Lesbian Choir (PLC) celebrates its 40th anniversary season with a powerful and timely Pride concert, Queer Joy Is Our Resistance, performing June 20–21 at the Parkrose Performing Arts Theater.

For four decades, PLC has uplifted LGBTQ+ voices through music—work that feels more vital than ever. Amid increasing attacks on LGBTQ+ rights across the country, the choir’s message is one of visibility, resilience, and collective strength.

“By our mere presence—and through the power of song—we stand in resilience and solidarity with LGBTQ+ communities and all marginalized people,” said Mary McCarty, PLC Artistic Director.

“We choose to be visible and heard, especially in moments when others would silence or diminish us,” said Toni Jaffe, PLC Board President. “Queer joy is not just celebration—it is an act of resistance. When we affirm dignity and equality for all, we strengthen the fabric of our entire community.”

The concert repertoire reflects the joy, courage, and lived experiences of LGBTQ+ people. Selections include You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) by Sylvester, a beloved anthem of queer liberation; You Gotta Be by Des’ree, a call to boldness and integrity; and This Is Me from The Greatest Showman, an empowering declaration of identity and self-worth—especially resonant for transgender individuals and youth exploring who they are.

Audiences can expect an uplifting and affirming experience that celebrates identity, community, and the enduring power of joy.
