An Emmy-Nominated Comedy Writer Is Opening for His Former Student. Both Are Taping Specials the Same Night. When Cat Alvarado started performing stand-up in 2013, Emmy-nominated comedy writer Paul Clay — who wrote for Designing Women and The Arsenio Hall Show — took her under his wing. More than a decade later, she’s headlining her own comedy special taping in Portland, and he’s opening for her. One generation of comedy handing off to the next, on the same stage, the same night.
The show is Trad Wife — Alvarado’s scorched-earth comedy special about growing up evangelical, surviving purity culture, and the myth of the perfect wife. An ex-evangelical herself, Alvarado built the show from her own experience coming of age in a conservative church during the era of purity rings and celibacy vows.
“It speaks to anyone who grew up in a similar culture and has had to overcome the traumas of that worldview,” says Alvarado. “Humor can heal by helping us laugh at our collective experiences.” The show has traveled across the US and around the world, was named one of Sydney Fringe’s Best Shows in Comedy, and won the Pittsburgh Fringe Best Femme Lead Comedy award. Alvarado’s comedy album Off-White is available on SiriusXM, Spotify, and YouTube.
At a moment when tradwife culture is dominating TikTok and Gen Z is trending surprisingly more conservative, Trad Wife lands as both a comedy show and a cultural antidote — funny first, cathartic second.
Two shows. One night. July 24th at the Curious Comedy Theatre in Portland

They say “curiosity killed the cat”, but in this case, this particular Cat will kill at Curious Comedy! Would love to go see her and Paul Clay.

In need of a laugh that makes my stomach hurt!

This show looks awesome. I always have fun at curious comedy
I want these tickets. I need to be rescued from my trad-wife-life for just one night!!!
I don’t know about a trad-wife life, and I’m not sure that’s important. For me, a good laugh makes over a difficult summer — so, Cat Alvarado: You are the medicine!
As an ex-Catholic who knows how to laugh about it all now and a former trad-wife, Cat would be cathartic for me!
As a non-trad stay-at-home partner, this sounds great!
Would love to hear comedy on evangelicals and trad wife lifestyle. What a hoot.
