Jakki and the Pink Smudge, colloquially known as Smudge, is an indie rock outfit from Portland, Oregon. Our sound has been described as indie-punk-funk, dreamy fuzz rock, and peachy pop rock, but ultimately, we are informed by the intent of just making good music and surrounding ourselves with good people who like it too. For those who have yet to be smudged, you can hear flashes of our inspirations from the gritty twang of Wednesday, lyrical prowess of This is Lorelei, and the suppleness of Slow Pulp, filtered through a voice, style, and stickiness that is entirely our own.
Smudge performances were built on a nomadic DIY landscape. The band started as a project by Jakki Wise, taken all over the country by bands and musicians who wanted to play the music together live, known as smudging. Each show took on a new chemistry, allowing the songs to grow, bend, and surprise in real time. This rotating cast became a hallmark of the project and helped fuel its sense of experimentation and play.
In 2023, Smudge entered a new chapter with a permanent rhythm section featuring Oliver Lester on bass, Jasper Gill on drums, and Jude Abare on synth. With their debut album released in May 2025 and a solidified live band, Smudge has stepped into this next season with renewed focus, sharper energy, and a sound that continues to build upon itself.
