At a moment when Gen Z is trending surprisingly more conservative, “Trad Wife” offers an antidote: self love. The show is about rediscovering your own worth in a world that wants to use religion to make you feel smaller. The result is a hilarious journey through faith, failure, and finding yourself.
“I wrote the show about my own experience coming of age in a conservative church during the time of purity rings and celibacy vows,” said Alvarado. “It speaks to anyone who grew up in a similar culture and has had to overcome the traumas of that worldview. It sounds serious for a comedy show, but humor can heal by helping us laugh at our collective experiences. It has been incredibly rewarding traveling across the US and the globe and seeing such a broad range of people connect with the material.”
The taping carries a generational throughline. Alvarado’s opener is Paul Clay, the Emmy-nominated comedy writer who wrote for Designing Women and The Arsenio Hall Show and who has mentored Alvarado since she began performing in 2013. More than a decade later, the writer who helped shape her comedy is opening for his former student, with both comedians taping specials the same night. It is one generation of comedy handing off to the next, on the same stage.
“Trad Wife” was named one of Sydney Fringe’s “Best Shows in Comedy” and won the Pittsburgh Fringe “Best Femme Lead Comedy” award. Alvarado has performed stand-up across the US and Canada for over 13 years. In 2023 she released her comedy album “Off-White” with Blonde Medicine Records, available on SiriusXM, Spotify, and YouTube.
