The Portland Cello Project (PCP), classical music and rock-mashup maestros are venturing down a new road. Teaming up with Tyrone Hendrix (who has played with Prince, Stevie Wonder, and Liv Warfield) and the PDX Soul Collective, PCP is collaborating with and showcasing Portland’s best kept secret — its world-renowned soul scene.

Expect classical music favorites contrasted with soul and rhythm staples, rare songs, improvisation, and everything in-between. Each performance has featured cameos from a wide variety of beloved stars, such as Prince backup singer Saeeda Wright, Cello Project frequent collaborator JANE, Ronnie Wright (a.k.a. BESPEAK), and Arietta Ward (daughter of jazz legend Janice Scroggins).

The show is co-curated by heavyweight drummer and mainstay of the PCP line up, Tyrone Hendrix (Prince, Stevie Wonder, Liv Warfield), who also steps out of his comfort zone, singing songs like Radiohead’s “No Surprises.” Also resonating during every show is the trumpet of virtuosic trumpeter, Farnell Newton (Jill Scott, Bootsy Collins). Hendrix and Newton lead the cellist’s formidable backing band that amplifies and deepens familiar and brand new arrangements. When asked about collaborating with the classically-trained musicians, Hendrix shared, “It’s all about connecting people from different backgrounds to do it. At the end of the day, we’re all music lovers.”

Honoring classics from the 60s, 70s, and later neo-soul, this collaboration with PDX Soul Collective rolls out unique, genre-bending arrangements, bridging soul music with both traditional and non-traditional classical favorites. Audiences can look forward to unique adaptations of everything from J.S. Bach to Nina Simone, Igor Stravinsky to Jill Scott, and Lili Boulanger to Marvin Gaye. Get ready for a show that is uniquely Portland Cello Project but with new style, sound and soul.
