5th Avenue Cinema Presents Politics in Animation | Persepolis, Waltz With Bashir, Free Popcorn, Free Admission for Portland State University Students

Politics in Animation
More info: 5thavecinema.com

Persepolis
FRI & SAT: 7:00 SUN: 3:00
Dir. Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud (2007); Iran, 96m
Starring: Chiara Mastroianni, Danielle Darrieux, Catherine Deneuve
French with English Subtitles

Waltz With Bashir
FRI & SAT: 9:30 SUN: 5:30
Dir. Ari Folman (2008); Israel, 90m
Starring: Ari Folman, Mickey Leon, Yehezkel Lazarov

The timeless black and white traditional animation techniques employed in Persepolis mimic director and writer Marjane Satrapi’s autobiographical graphic novels of the same name. This exploration of the Iran born artist’s personal life and the theocratic regime that gained control after the Iranian Revolution of 1979 follows her coming of age and the life she leads now. In contrast, Waltz with Bashir’s stylish and markedly modern graphics–often confused with rotoscope–found itself adapted into a graphic novel the following year. Waltz With Bashir is a documentary following a former Israeli soldier’s mission to find the memories of the First Lebanon War he lost. The animation drifts through documentarian style interviews and vivid surreal imagery. The nature of memory is unraveled as the director’s thoughts depict a milieu of lived experiences and the efforts of Israeli veterans to cope after the conflict. (more…)
