I.      Job Purpose:

This position works in support of the certified parole and probation deputy positions and with the Work Program/Community Corrections Coordinator regarding work crew supervision and management of work assignments and job sites.  This position mainly has contact with parole and probation clients as members of the work crew. Other duties may include equipment/tool purchase/maintenance and security of tools and oversight of the proper use of equipment and tools by those assigned to the work crew.  Work is primarily performed in the field and sometimes at a desk or in a vehicle. This position is responsible for duties that do not require certification by the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).

II.        Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities:

Work Crew Supervision:

  • Transport subjects to and from job sites.
  • Assign to jobs as appropriate for job skills and abilities.
  • Resolve conflict between work crew members.
  • Motivate crew to work and complete assigned tasks.
  • Able to operate various tools/machines, i.e. weed eaters, lawn mowers, chainsaws, compressors, etc.
  • Able to operate a 13-person van pulling a trailer, including being able to parallel-park and back up with trailer attached.
  • Able to complete general maintenance and repairs on equipment.

Perform Administrative Duties:

  • Procure and coordinate jobs for the crew.
  • Order equipment and tools and maintenance supplies.
  • Keep appropriate records of crew members’ attendance and performance.
  • Provide information to parole and probation deputies on crew members activities and performance or absence.
  • Perform other duties such as vehicle maintenance as directed by the Community Corrections Lieutenant.
  • Perform office duties as assigned.

III.      Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Ability to successfully complete a 6 month probationary period.
  • Ability to use a computer keyboard and mouse.
  • Ability to use a personal computer and related software, printer, copier, facsimile and multi-line telephone.
  • Ability to use general office software including word-processing, spreadsheet and database programs.
  • Ability to push/pull objects, lift objects off the ground, from elevated surfaces and carry up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to sit at a desk or in a vehicle and stand alternately for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to bend over at the waist, kneel, reach, twist at the waist and walk.
  • Ability to hear alarms, voice conversation, etc.
  • Must wear/use PPE when in any situation where exposure to biohazard is likely.
  • Must be able to work in all weather.
  • Ability to grip with hands and fingers.
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability and skill to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, especially with difficult people to motivate.
  • Ability and skill to learn and apply policies and procedures of the law enforcement office.
  • Ability and skill to organize and encourage cooperation of program participants.
  • Must have ability to work effectively with angry, hostile or upset offenders or others.
  • Must have ability to make effective and appropriate evaluations and decisions under times of stress.
  • Ability to cope with the physical effects of acute emotional personal stress (fear, anger, etc.).
  • Ability to cope with the physical effects of acute emotional stress of others.

IV.      Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Experience and/or training which would demonstrate the ability to perform the work.
  • Experience in customer service field helpful.
  • Minimum 21 years of age.
  • U.S. Citizen; or ability to obtain U.S. Citizenship within timeframe allowed. (OAR 259-008-0010)
  • Valid Oregon driver’s license by time of appointment.
  • No criminal record or extensive traffic violation record.
  • Must hold or be able to obtain LEDS Certification.
  • Must be able to obtain a CJIS Security Clearance.
  • Prior to or on date of hire:

    • Able to complete a thorough employment and/or criminal history check.
    • Able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug test (not required for all positions).
    • Final candidates will be required to provide official proof of college degree and certified transcripts (not required for all positions).

V. Position Details: 

The duties outlined in this job description are not all inclusive and additional duties and tasks will be assigned as required.  Not all duties listed will be assigned to all employees in this classification.

This position may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

Position has exposure to hazards that include angry, hostile or upset offenders and their families, threat of injury from firearms or other weapons, exposure to adverse weather conditions and possibly to communicable diseases and biohazards.

This position is subject to and shall subscribe to the Oath of Office and shall be subject to the laws, rules, policies and procedures of the Sheriff’s Office, the County and the State as they apply to all employees.
