Position Title: Software Engineer Level II
Location: Remote

Position Summary: 

  • The Software Engineer Level II is responsible for supporting and influencing the technical direction of Powell’s Books software development practice and improving all aspects of Powell’s Books technology. This position functions as a mentor for junior members of the software development team and product support personnel.
  • This position is additionally responsible for security penetration testing and hardening, performance testing, and software and process improvement. They will collaborate with business stakeholders, other internal Technology teams, and users to deliver reliable, instrumented, and performant applications to our customers. This position reports to a member of IT Management.
  • Essential Functions:
  • All essential functions listed for Software Engineer Level 1
  • Designs and develops applications in accordance with the overall architecture of Powell’s Books.
  • Maintains quality and ensures the responsiveness of applications.
  • Develops and maintains third-party integrations and in-house solutions for Powell’s eCommerce platforms, in-store customer and employee support systems, and other Powell’s technologies
  • Collaborates with the rest of the engineering and product teams to design and launch new features.
  • Maintains code integrity and organization.
  • Serves as a mentor for our internal development team.
  • Conducts code evaluations under the Software Engineering Manager. Ensures that submitted code passes a code standard and mentors team members on how to improve their code.
  • Works with and leads cross-functional project teams consisting of systems engineers, product owners, stakeholders, and designers to build cohesive technology solutions for Powell’s Books.
  • Maintains security and data protection standards for Powell’s Books applications.
  • Reduces the time to value for software development efforts through Continuous Integration and Deployment.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Requirement and Qualifications: 

  • Highly experienced with at least two back-end programming languages (PHP, Java, Python, Ruby, C#, Elixir, Golang).
  • Proficient experience using advanced JavaScript libraries and frameworks such as AngularJS, ReactJS, JQuery.
  • Development experience for both mobile and desktop environments.
  • Experience with Git or other distributed version control system.
  • Experience mentoring junior developers.
  • Experience with cloud migrations and refactoring legacy applications.
  • Experience working with SQL and NoSQL databases.
  • Excellent communication skills with demonstrated ability to explain complex technical issues and software engineering concepts to non-engineer stakeholders both verbally and in writing.
  • Must have the ability to work remotely
  • Experience working in agile and test-driven development.
  • Ability to analyze complex development tasks and break them down into smaller deliverables.
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams consisting of systems engineers, product owners, and designers.
  • Experience building a continuous integration and delivery pipeline.
  • BS in computer science or equivalent work experience.
  • Leadership skills necessary to inspire, lead, and train others.
  • Satisfactory results from criminal background check required. 
  • Love of books and reading.
  • Physical requirements – Group D.
