Website OSB Professional Liability Fund

The Oregon State Bar Professional Liability Fund (PLF) is seeking a part-time Freelance Legal Editor on a project basis.

Who We’re Looking For

You want to use your law degree to make an impact—just not by practicing law. Our ideal Freelance Legal Editor is a passionate wordsmith who loves the nuance of language. You take pride in leaving documents better than you found them, yet you’re a respectful collaborator with those whose work you edit. You believe that details matter—even if you’re the only one who notices. You’re a self-described (and unapologetic!) “word nerd” who will go down a thesaurus rabbit hole searching for the perfect turn of phrase.

As a lawyer, you are also aware of the particularities and intricacies of communicating about and around legal issues. Though you might not be a subject matter expert in every area of law, you do know what questions to ask to enhance written work on a variety of legal topics. Your experience in the legal profession gives you an important background in the substantive communications you will be editing.

Details

The pay range for this position is $60.00 – $70.00 per hour. Hourly expectations are approximately 50-80 hours a month on a project basis. As Freelance Legal Editor, you will provide and use your own office space and equipment and work on your own schedule.

What You’ll Do

As Freelance Legal Editor, you will be involved in supporting production of PLF publications by writing, editing, and proofreading a variety of internal and external communications as needed on a project basis. This might include:

  • Editing newsletter articles and blog posts on a broad array of issues, including organizational updates, substantive law, practice management, and lawyer well-being
  • Drafting and editing broadcast emails, staff bios, announcements, brochures, and other marketing materials
  • Editing new educational and practice resources created for legal professionals
  • Proofreading PLF documents

Qualifications

To set you up for success in this position, we ask that you meet these criteria:

  • JD degree from an accredited law school
  • At least three years of professional editing experience
  • Superior copyediting and proofreading skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in using MS Office Suite for editing and GenAI tools for writing and editing enhancements
  • Familiarity with the Oregon State Bar, the Professional Liability Fund, Oregon law, and the Oregon legal community preferred
