Design Rocks, a featured event of Design Week Portland, is an immersive concert experience and a meditation on the intersection of design and music.
We will explore the influence of design—print, lighting, tech, costume, experience—on the rock ’n’ roll art form.
Tell me more…
In 1972, Ziggy Stardust landed on Earth and rocked the world. By 1973, he had packed up his spaceship and left us.
On October 10, he’ll come back for a night.
Where has he been? Why has he returned? How will we receive him? With the advantages of modern technology, what would his visit look like? How would it sound? How would we experience it?
Equal parts art show, multimedia experiment and retro-futurist rock theater, it’s going to be a kickass party.
Part of the challenge we gave ourselves with Design Rocks was to use art and technology to create a truly immersive experience. To that end, we’ve recruited an eclectic team of Portland’s finest interactive designers, programmers, lighting designers, and costumers to apply their talents to the creation of a rich, interactive, audio-visual experience.
We’ve assembled a cadre of more than 30 poster artists from around the world, and tasked them with interpreting the iconic Ziggy Stardust character via the medium of the rock poster.
Curated by Michael Buchino, the results will be featured in our gallery show At the Altar of a Starman, to be launched during Design Rocks, and maintained for an extended period post-event in the Refuge PDX gallery space.
High-quality prints of show pieces will be available.
Dr. Spaceman, Portland’s Ziggy-era David Bowie tribute, features a cast of musicians bent on bringing Bowie’s early-seventies glam sound to the stage. Drawing on an eclectic mix of musical experience in Portland and elsewhere, Dr. Spaceman is ready to rocket you into a moonage daydream.
