On December 17, 18 and 19, Aaron Meyer and Tim Ellis will open the doors at the First Congregational Church to the 15th season of their Holiday Concert Series.
While the Aaron Meyer Holiday Concert Series has been a beloved event since the series began in 2000, this year will be particularly memorable for Aaron. The 2015 series, sponsored by Tonkin family of Dealerships, will pay tribute to those who have inspired, motivated and supported Meyer’s musical path.
The first person on that list is his father, violinist Julian Meyer, and Aaron’s first violin teacher at age four.
“Whenever I begin a project, or head onto the stage to perform, I hear my father saying, ‘give it all you’ve got, or don’t do it at all,'” said Meyer.
“He instilled in me an incredible work ethic and a deep passion for the violin, and for life,” said Meyer. “In addition to my own education, my father taught me the value of teaching young people as part of the musical journey.”
Julian Meyer, now 72, will take the stage with his son to perform the 2nd and 3rd movements from Bach’s Double Violin Concerto. Both are featured on Father & Son, the CD they recorded in 2014.
Also appearing on the program, from Middlebury College in Vermont, are organist Emory Fanning and pianist Diana Fanning. Meyer spent many of his formative years under their musical guidance and they remain close family friends.
As young children, Meyer and his sister Rebecca spent several summers at Point Counter Point (PCP), a chamber music summer camp on Lake Dunmore in the Green Mountains of Vermont.
As directors of the camp, Emory “Doc” and Diana became Aaron’s summer family over the four years he spent as a camper there. Returning to camp as a counselor allowed Aaron to continue to build the friendships he had developed over the years and solidify his place in the music world.
“It was the best of both worlds,” said Meyer, “music lessons in the mornings, and afternoons filled with hiking, swimming, and bonfires — all in the incredibly beautiful setting of the Green Mountains.”
“After all these years, it will be nice to have an opportunity to finally boss them around,” Meyer said jokingly.
