Martin Hsu at Compound Gallery
Art Show Opening
Los Angeles-based designer and illustrator Martin Hsu is proud to take his artwork up north to the Compound Gallery in Portland, Oregon.
With Illustrious, Hsu (http://www.martinhsu.com) gets a chance to focus on his fine art skills, displaying more than six original works painted on wood and his newest art publication, Multigrain. Copies of Multigrain (chronicling Hsu's past fine art) and Martin Hsu T-shirts and prints will also be available. Throughout each of Hsu's works, his Chinese-American background is modernized through Hsu's renditions of Asian folklore and imaginary figures.
From the artist: "I will have six new original paintings on wood inspired by Taiwanese floral fabric, flower-picking ladies, and giant forest creatures.
"These pieces depict the story of hard-working women in nostalgic gardens of peony and chrysanthemum flowers, which are symbols of nobility, value, and peace. These well-deserving women are rewarded with modern luxuries such as organic coffee, pedicures, and flat screen TVs for their spirit and perseverance. It's a celebration of a simpler life in nature with happiness as the ultimate reward."
Currently a Character Designer for Walt Disney TV Animation, Hsu is excited to see his school of fish come to life with this Fall's new series Fish Hooks (Disney Channel premiere September 24, 2010).
The underwater creatures of Fish Hooks are just the latest in Hsu's extensive experience in animated and commercial character art. Fans know Hsu for his design work in Nickelodeon's Ni Hao, Kai-Lan, Disney XD's Kick Buttowski, and Mighty Fine Inc.'s Ruby Gloom T-shirt-turned-franchise.
