October 30: Portland Hip Hop Halloween (LA to PDX "Hollaween") @ Salmon St Studios HIP HOP HOLLAWEEN – LA to PDX
Saturday, October 30th, 2010
Salmon St. Studios
109 SE Salmon St
9pm, 21+, $7

The night before Halloween we are celebrating with live Hip Hop all night at the historic Salmon St. Studios. Performances include LA-based phenom GaKnew Roxwel, local show stompers Hives Inquiry Squad, rap poet explorer DMLH, the psychedelic future funk of Midas Dutch, along with some special guests for the after hours. Setting the tone for the space will be fresh wall murals and live painting raffle by local artists Matt Schlosky, Hunter Armstrong, Galen Malcom, and David Walker.

Affordably priced at $7, with a cash beer and wine bar and drink specials from 9-10, this party is all treat and no trick, ballin' on a budget at its best.

Salmon St. Studios has been a central point for the local Hip Hop community for many years. Previously it housed Zebulon Dak's Momentum Studios, where many of the classic Oldominion and Sandpeople projects were recorded. Now it is a 501(c)3 non-profit community space, as well as the home for Portland's chapter of the Zulu Nation.

GaKnew Roxwel is getting major attention in LA and is coming to Portland that week to drop in on Marv Ellis' NorthWest Fresh  jam. A grand champion slam poet at the national scale, GaKnew has been recognized by the LA Times on multiple occasions, and has appeared on HBO's Def Poetry Jam and in several Documentaries about spoken word poetry. He returned to his Hip Hop roots on a track called "Steppin Stones" with Slim Kid Tre of the PharCyde and independently released his full-length solo debut "Mannequin People" in 2008. We are excited to be hosting him for a full-on performance of his fresh soulful hip hop.

DMLH delivers relevant, poetic lyrics with a fun, anything-goes attitude that gets crowds loosened up and moving. After 3 years destroying basements and clubs as one half of genre-mashing electropunx Start Fires, DMLH has set out on his own in 2010 to explore new dimensions of live Hip Hop. The past year has seen him rock not only clubs and bars, but also guerrilla style with the Tall Bike Tour during Sunday Parkways, at packed-out house shows in South East, and freestyling for hours as part of a recent interactive installation at the Launch Pad Gallery. Fueled by soulful, funky beats from local producer Joe Cyrus, DMLH packs a powerful performance that has earned him a dedicated fanbase that stretches beyond the lines of genre and scene. Hives Inquiry Squad have been getting due respect over the past few years in Portland for highly energetic stage shows that deliver their poetic, tightly woven raps in fluid motion with their heavy electronic influenced production. Emcee/producer Gavin Theory and emcee Lucas Dix combine into a nonstop force of creative energy that builds like a hurricane on stage. They bounce fun, conceptual raps that traverse the span of rap styles off each other, backed up by their live  DJ The Great Mundane.

Midas Dutch is comprised of Joe Cyrus (producer/emcee) and Daltonic (emcee). While Daltonic is relatively new to the hip-hop scene his quick wit and lyrical style have drawn comparisons from Aesop Rock to Chali 2na. Joe Cyrus has been rocking mics throughout the country in the last two years. Originally from Philadelphia, Cyrus has performed with such greats as KRS-ONE, Method Man, Wu-Tang, Hieroglyphics and Jedi Mind Tricks, to name a few. Having released his solo debut, Initiation, on STLP records in 2008, Cyrus is no stranger to hard work, touring from Boston to Washington D.C. in 2009 and throughout the Northwest in 2010. With his recent move to Portland, he's ready to take his new project, Midas Dutch, to a larger audience. Listen to Midas Dutch at http://myspace.com/plutohiphop
