CreativeCares and Disability Aid Abroad (DAA) will celebrate their partnership and local presence at an art exhibition and charity benefit at City Hall sponsored by City Commissioner Dan Saltzman on Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 5:30pm. The show will feature an installation of photos from a recent DAA project at the Mehayo Centre for Disabled Youth in Tanzania, as well as the release of the first CreativeCares Photobook from the trip, called "Changing The Face of Disability". Both the book and the gallery-size photos will be on sale to benefit the CreativeCares mission. Several local businesses are providing refreshments for the event.

"I hope this can be a night for people from all walks of life to come together and celebrate for a good cause," said CreativeCares Founder Burk Jackson. "I think everyone will see how storytelling through photography can profoundly impact someone's life, and that they will want to get involved." It was that same realization that led Jackson to team up with DAA Founder John Coghlan in the first place. "After [Coghlan] told me about the [Mehayo Centre] and its challenges, I thought it would be a perfect scenario for CreativeCares to help them tell their story," said Jackson.

Coghlan and Jackson traveled to Tanzania in June to document the lives of the disabled children living at Mehayo, many of whom have been abandoned at its gates due to social stigma. Jackson spent time deeply involved in the lives of the children, and the images he captured there will be on display in the Portland City Hall atrium from October 21st 29th, beginning with the charity benefit Thursday night.

Jackson founded CreativeCares to help non-profits find and use the skills of philanthropic members of the creative community to further their impact. CreativeCares and DAA will continue to work together for social change in Portland and around the world.
