Square dancing, fiddling and banjo plunking may be rooted in America’s Appalachia region, but old-time string band music has a fiery following in Portland, and this January the city will once again be playing host to one of the most unique old-time music events in the country: The Portland Old-Time Music Gathering, presented by Bubbaville, a Portland nonprofit group that promotes American roots music.
- FRIDAY – Concerts and Dance $20 advance, $25 at the door
- SATURDAY – Concerts and Dances (6pm – midnight) – $20 advance, $25 at the door. (Saturday daytime events are free)
- WEEKEND PASS – Includes Friday, all day Saturday and Saturday dances – $35 advance, $40 at door
There are plenty of ways for acoustic music lovers of all ages to get involved in the Gathering!
See some of the nation’s most accomplished old-time musicians perform their favorites on stage. Head to a square dance, where live bands and enthusiastic square dance callers will help beginners and veterans alike swing their partners and promenade with pride. Take out your guitar, banjo, fiddle or mandolin and join an informal jam or improve your technique at an expert-led workshop. Bring your little ones to a kids concert and the instrument “petting zoo.”
