The Past and Present of Oregon’s Outdoor Gear Industry @ Oregon Historical Society | Free, Presented by Dr. Rachel Gross and Woody Blackford

November 15 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Oregon Historical Society

Portland, OR 97205 United States

Why do Americans go shopping on their way to the outdoors? Since the Civil War, millions of men and women have gone to the woods imagining they were escaping modern life. But the equipment and clothing they take with them could hardly be more modern. Portland, Oregon, has been a hub of innovation for outdoor gear since the rise of the industry at the turn of the twentieth century. The evolution of the American outdoor industry locally and nationally shows how companies and outdoorspeople alike worked to make consumer culture a central part of the outdoor experience.

Dr. Rachel Gross, a historian of the outdoor gear industry, will trace the central role Portland companies such as Hirsch-Weis, Columbia, and even G.I. Joe’s have played in the growth of the industry in the twentieth century. Woody Blackford is the Vice President of Design and Innovation for the Columbia brand at Columbia Sportswear and has been integral in developing Columbia’s most innovative patented technologies since joining the company in 2005. In his thirteen years with Columbia, Mr. Blackford has helped grow Columbia’s year-round product offerings beyond a winter-centric focus by developing technology for warm weather climates. Prior to joining Columbia, he held various positions in design, brand management, and sourcing at Sierra Designs.

To rebuild a more resilient Puerto Rico, El Departamento De La Comida is reimagining how they produce, protect, and share the food we eat. The need for food security & sovereignty is one of the biggest lessons from hurricane Maria, and one that has inspired their team to reopen El Departamento De La Comida as a non-profit organization.

El Departamento De La Comida’s mission is to work with local food producers and consumers to develop a Puerto Rico that grows, eats and owns its food. They focus on supporting critically affected communities through innovation in food, agriculture, and renewable energy initiatives.
