Rooted, by internationally acclaimed solo performer Tim Miller, is about New York history and Miller’s family trees that grow there, and what happens when we actually achieve one kind of social change after long effort only to face huge new challenges in 2017. With stops along the way to a queer history of hurting hearts, to the DNA roots the lead Miller to Central NY, and an 80s power rock epiphany on a NY farm road in Yates County, Rooted is a funny and charged story of the times we are living in.

Miller says, “How do we as American citizens – and my Aussie husband Alistair is now one too- ground ourselves—root ourselves, really—for the assault on democracy and civil rights (and sanity) that we are currently in under Trump? Artists like me need to ground ourselves, pace ourselves, root ourselves in community and create the performance that we and, hopefully, others need. The piece is very much about connecting the historical dots.”

“Tim Miller sings that song of the self which interrogates, with explosive, exploding, subversive joy and freedom, the constitution and borderlines of selfhood. You think you don’t need to hear such singing? You do! You must!” — Tony Kushner, author of Angels in America

The piece begins with Tim standing in front of the Department of Homeland Security waiting for his immigrant husband Alistair during his citizenship interview. This launches Miller into all the times he has been arrested there in front of that building: with ACT UP, immigrant rights actions, First Amendment defense. He tells the story of getting married to his Australian partner of many years Alistair in NYC on the day the Defense of Marriage Act was overturned in 2013 which leads him to connect with the last family members to be married in New York state, his great great grandparents Angell in 1865 in Central NY.

“I am calling on the ancestors to help me deal with our current American mess,” Tim says. “If my great great grandpa Billy Angell in Jerusalem, NY in 1861 could join the NY 44th regiment when he was 18 years old and deal with a civil war that would kill almost a million Americans in the struggle against the same white supremacists that now again fill DC, then I can face my own queer struggles ahead. Fasten your seatbelts. Plant your feet. Get rooted in your history, root your resistance and be ready for these rocky times.”
