BITCH’N
What happens when you combine the female forces behind projects such as Duover, Orquestra Pacifico Tropical, Point Juncture WA, Ioa, Great Wilderness, and Sallie Ford? This is where Bitch’n brews. The fresh, all-woman punk-meets-pop five-piece came together in spring 2015, recording epic free jams that they later wrote lyrics over. Including Rebecca Rasmussen, Amanda Spring, Emily Overstreet, Nefertiti Porter, and Shana Lindbeck. Bitch’n is equal parts Fugazi and Tom Tom Club, with the playfulness of Dirty Projectors and Hot Chip, keeping it bumpin’ with catchy songs accented by dark bass, psych-pop guitars and keys, driving drum beats, and all five women’s voices singing and sometimes shouting in unison. Experimental in nature, Bitch’n expertly weave a tapestry through their songs, keeping the project from falling into a single box, while simultaneously following a cohesive thread.

NO KIND OF RIDER

It’s never been easy to tie No Kind of Rider to a single city or region, given their formation as teenagers in Tulsa, subsequent move to Portland, and the recent relocation of drummer Jon Van Patten to Brooklyn. But with the completion of their first full-length, Savage Coast (Summer 2018), NKOR’s many influences merge to form a unique statement on devotion, commitment, grief, and hope.

During production, three of the five bandmates’ fathers passed away, and from the opening instrumental to the closing nautical soundscape, the band guides listeners through an urgent, tense, and deeply moving 45 minutes of music. By the end, it’s clear that those five teenagers from Tulsa can never go home again.

The haunting melodies, delivered by lead singer, Samuel Alexander, are right out front where they belong, buoyed by Wes Johnson’s bass, Jeremy Louis’ guitar, Joe Page’s synths, and Van Patten’s wide-ranging work on the drums. With three EP’s and extensive touring under their collective belt, it’s a quintet that knows how to play with and for each other.

Mero
Mero is a dreamy electronic, experimental rock band from Portland, OR. With lush cavernous vocals, swelling electric guitars, rushing soundscapes, and R&B/trip hop influenced electronic beats, Mero seems to have arrived, unexpectedly, from elements of its influence (Bjork, Four Tet, James Blake, Daughter, Radiohead, Lauryn Hill, Kendrick Lamar) nuanced by its folk roots in storytelling and a fascination with the evolution of human history.

Mero is the newest project from Portland songwriters Mel Guérison (Sandy Loam, Moorea Masa & The Mood, Other Lives), Rachel Anna Dial (Big World Audio Theater, Wesley Randolph Eader), Caroline Belk & Phillip Rogers (Y La Bamba, Ezza Rose Band, Whales Whailing, Mamai).

Having only been a band in the Portland scene for seven months, they were invited in February of 2016 to open for the band Other Lives to sold out crowds in Europe. Following this tour, which was their first together as a band, they have been working on a debut record (release date TBA) with producer and good friend Jonathan Mooney while playing local shows and continuing to write and collaborate in the mean time.

Most recently, they have been accompanied by Shawn Alpay (Matt Pond PA, Tiny Telephone recording, Completions) on cello.
