Set to the toe-tapping tunes of Scott Joplin and overflowing with 1930s nostalgia, The Sting takes place in Chicago: a city best known for crime, deception, and murder. Dressed impeccably in a pinstripe suit, young Johnny “Kelly” Hooker, pairs with a veteran grifter Henry “Shaw” Gondorff to swindle a small fortune from New York racketeer Doyle Lonnegan. The duo’s elaborate and meticulously crafted scheme involving a phony betting parlor, fabricated race results, and countless fake bookies culminates in one of the most intoxicating crime capers of the 20th century.
Directed by the enigmatic George Roy Hill, The Sting was the second of only two major hits throughout his unsteady career. While often criticized for his impersonal style, The Sting garnered critical acclaim and portrayed Hill at his very best: a gifted storyteller with a powerful sense of narrative, and a nostalgic flair for detail.
About 5th Avenue Cinema
Oregon’s only student run cinema has been operating non-profit since 1989. Our goals are to provide further education for PSU students interested in film, as well as a fun place for people to see something they wouldn’t ordinarily get to see on the big screen. The general public is always invited to attend and there is FREE POPCORN at every show. Our feature films are presented on 35mm film, with the occasional screening on our rare Norelco 16mm projector.
