More info:

Citizens of the Universe are a funk/hip hop/afrobeat powerhouse! Based in Corvallis, OR, with members from Eugene and Portland, the Citizens have decades of history to draw on, featuring members of Eleven Eyes, Stairway Denied, Xenat-Ra, Huzzah, Future Sunz, and too many other bands to list. Citizens bring a mix of classics, covering artists like Fela, Funkadelic, & Sly & The Family Stone, deep cuts from bands like the Lafayette Rhythm Band, Budos Band and Heatwave, and deeply-grooving, socially-engaged original material.

The Citizens are Monk Metz on vocals, Curtis Monette on guitar and vocals, Dave Trenkel on keys, Page Hundemer on bass, Joel Hirsch on percussion and vocals, JD Monroe on drums and vocals, and a horn section with Matt Calkins on tenor sax, Peter Argyres on bari sax, and Bruce Green on trombone. Everyone is a Citizen of the Universe, whether they know it or not! The funk knows no borders!

James Villa (Brizzleman) is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. His self-produced music is described as neo soul, R & B, and synth funk. Influenced by the sounds around, both old and new, his style combines the echoes of yesterday’s soul singers, and the pulsing rhythms of today’s beats.$7

These guys are some of the most incredible musicians around. I’ve had the pleasure of playing with some of the members as well as seeing them live years ago back when they were known as Xenat-Ra. I’m so glad they are finally bringing their genius to Portland!
