Hirokazu Koreeda’s directorial debut tells the story of Yumiko, a young mother haunted by the past loss of her grandmother and the recent loss of her husband. Koreeda’s interest in the emotional impact of light is exemplified through Maborosi’s shadowy visuals and Michiko Kitamura’s costume design, created specifically for the film’s natural lighting. With a background in documentary, Koreeda’s search for truth continues in the characters of Maborosi, who are portrayed with a believable array of human strengths and fallibilities. The Japanese title, 幻の光 (Maboroshi no hikari), translates to “Phantom Light,” an idea that captures Moborosi’s exploration of the visible and invisible, the living and the lingering spirits, the real and the fictional.
About 5th Avenue Cinema
Oregon’s only student run cinema has been operating non-profit since 1989. Our goals are to provide further education for PSU students interested in film, as well as a fun place for people to see something they wouldn’t ordinarily get to see on the big screen. The general public is always invited to attend and there is FREE POPCORN at every show. Our feature films are presented on 35mm film, with the occasional screening on our rare Norelco 16mm projector.
