The Face of Another (35mm)
Dir. Hiroshi Teshigahara (1966); Japan, 124m
Starring: Tatsuya Nakadai, Mikijirô Hira, Kyôko Kishida
Japanese with English subtitles

For his second adaptation of a Kobo Abe novel, Hiroshi Teshigahara overcomes the tough task of translating the existential, monologue driven writing of The Face of Another to the screen. The story centers on a chemist whose face becomes disfigured as the result of an explosive accident in his laboratory. In a very different vein than the B-horror premise would suggest, The Face of Another focuses exclusively on philosophical explorations on the meaning of faces, the prison of facelessness, and the freedom of anonymity.

Teshigahara employs surreal imagery and set design to capture, in truly cinematic terms, Kobo Abe’s subjective writing style. The Face of Another is as much a masterpiece as its literary source, posing questions and revealing images that will stir your thoughts on humanity.

About 5th Avenue Cinema
Oregon’s only student run cinema has been operating non-profit since 1989. Our goals are to provide further education for PSU students interested in film, as well as a fun place for people to see something they wouldn’t ordinarily get to see on the big screen. The general public is always invited to attend and there is FREE POPCORN at every show. Our feature films are presented on 35mm film, with the occasional screening on our rare Norelco 16mm projector.
