The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra closes out its historic 40th Anniversary season with A Gallery of Music and Musicians, performing Modest Mussorgsky’s enthralling masterwork, Pictures at an Exhibition, June 1st and 2nd at Skyview Concert Hall. The orchestra premieres Maestro Salvador Brotons’ composition Double Concerto ‘L’andorrà,’ co-starring concertmaster Eva Richey and principal cellist Dieter Ratzlaf.
Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, arranged and orchestrated by Maurice Ravel, features 10 movements inspired by the artwork of his close friend, Viktor Hartmann (britannica.com). Brotons’ Double Concerto “L’andorrà” is a colorful piece commissioned for two of the Principality of Andorra’s greatest musical figures, twin brothers Gerard and Lluís Claret. VSO concertmaster Eva Richey and principal cellist Dieter Ratzlaf are in the spotlight, showcasing their virtuosic styles in the multiple cadenzas throughout the concerto.
Pianos generously provided by Michelle’s Pianos. The performances are Saturday, June 1st, 3 PM and Sunday June 2nd, 7 PM at Skyview Concert Hall, located at 1300 NW 139th Street in Vancouver, WA. Tickets are available for this concert and all 2018-2019 events at vancouversymphony.org or (360) 735-7278.
