Funklandia is kicking off its inaugural year in a big way with two days of funk and soul and a special kickoff jam. Started by Trumpeter Farnell Newton, Funklandia was created to showcase the past, present, and future of the Portland, Oregon, funk scene. Emphasizing community empowerment, the festivities will highlight high quality, live musical performances from homegrown talent.
Funklandia will feature performances by regional favorites Sarah Clarke (Dirty Revival), Arietta Ward (Mz. Etta’s World), Brian Foxworth (Linda Hornbuckle), Ultra Van Krome, Tyrone Hendrix (Swatkins Positive Agenda), DJ OG One (Official Portland Trailblazers DJ), Kyle Molitor (Bootsy Collins), funk legend Frankie Kash Waddy (Bootsy Collins, The JB’s, James Brown and Parliament Funkadelic), and many others.
Trumpeter Farnell Newton is one of the most versatile musicians in the Northwest, playing straight ahead jazz, smooth jazz, Latin music, soul, hip hop, funk and more. In the last few years, Farnell has toured with 3-time Grammy winning singer/songwriter Jill Scott and with the Legendary Rhinestone Rockstar Bassist Bootsy Collins. In previous years, Farnell has performed with great musical artists, including George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic Dumpstaphunk, The Nth Power, Lettuce, Karl Denson, Fred Wesley, Stevie Wonder, etc.
His NW Soul Academy is a creative brand dedicated to the expression and exploration of music for the soul. With a regionally specific focus, the academy specializes in music, education, culture, and fashion that are relevant to our community of artists, musicians, thinkers, and supporters.
Tonight’s show is a loving homage to James Brown. The Godfather of Soul, Mr. James Brown, also known as the “Hardest Working Man In Show Business,” left behind a legacy that will be remembered as long as there is music to play. Ever the perfectionist, James Brown always led one of the tightest acts ever musically… and this Tribute follows in those footsteps. $15. Pre-sale links and two day passes coming shortly, so please check back in a few days for those!
