Nightmare Alley is a fascinating film noir that was a departure for Tyrone Powers who had mostly played swashbucklers. Here he plays conman Stanton “Stan” Carlisle, a carnival barker working for Mademoiselle Zeena (Joan Blondell) and her drunken husband Pete (Ian Keith). Stan is after a code that the pair use to make it seem like Zeena has mind-reading powers. After accidentally killing Pete by handing him a bottle of wood alcohol, Zeena is forced to teach Stan the code. Stan then runs off with the code and becomes a popular mentalist in nightclubs. However, his lies and trickery eminently lead to his downfall. This gritty story explores sleazy carnival life, Western religious zealots, and the occult.

About 5th Avenue Cinema
Oregon’s only student run cinema has been operating non-profit since 1989. Our goals are to provide further education for PSU students interested in film, as well as a fun place for people to see something they wouldn’t ordinarily get to see on the big screen. The general public is always invited to attend and there is FREE POPCORN at every show. Our feature films are presented on 35mm film, with the occasional screening on our rare Norelco 16mm projector.
