Within the classic typology of United States filmmaking, the road movie, Arnold creates a lively and intimate, though not definitive look at the Midwestern United States. Informed by a 2007 New York Times article, Andrea Arnold sought to represent and give voice to the wandering “mag crew” youth.

Highlighting Star’s (Sasha Lane) escape from an Oklahoman trailer park, and the ensuing tension and youthful love that brews between her and her supervisor Jake (Shia LaBeouf). Shannon Neale sums up this Cannes Jury Winner better than I ever could: “Out of focus b-roll. Animals as always. Rippin soundtrack. Frickin hairdo’s. Good as shit.”

About 5th Avenue Cinema
Oregon’s only student run cinema has been operating non-profit since 1989. Our goals are to provide further education for PSU students interested in film, as well as a fun place for people to see something they wouldn’t ordinarily get to see on the big screen. The general public is always invited to attend and there is FREE POPCORN at every show. Our feature films are presented on 35mm film, with the occasional screening on our rare Norelco 16mm projector.
