Portland's Sinful Past Walking TourShanghaiers, Saloons & Skullduggery: A Walking Tour of Portland’s Sinful Past
June 16, 2018
4 p.m. | $18 | 21+

Meet @ Floyd’s Coffee
118 NW Couch St., Portland, OR 97209

As a nexus for labor and shipping in the Pacific Northwest, Portland often had the repute of a rugged, rough and tumble town, more than willing to allow the miners, loggers, and fishermen an opportunity to part with their hard earned cash in whatever debaucherous manner they chose.

In addition to the shanghaiers and con men, always on the prowl, saloons, gambling halls and bordellos also thrived in “Whitechapel,” “The North End,” or Old Town, as we know it today. Some of these storied establishments have come and gone, but others have survived, and many say that Portland, or “Strip City,” still has that vulgar and rugged reputation to this day.

Join Historian Doug Kenck-Crispin as we visit locations of famous saloons, bars and bordellos, card rooms and gambling dens, some of which are still in operation today! The tour will meet at Floyd’s Coffee at 118 SW Couch St. Feel free to arrive early and have a coffee! The tour will “end” outside of Mary’s Club, one of Portland’s most hallowed strip clubs*. At the conclusion of the tour, you can join Doug inside for an adult beverage!

Doug Kenck-Crispin is the Ribald Resident Historian from He is the co-producer of the bi-weekly podcast series Kick Ass Oregon History. Doug has been featured in the Portland Mercury, The Oregonian, Portland Monthly and OPB’s Oregon Experience. He has a BA in History, and is nearing completion of his MA in Public History, with an emphasis on the History of the Pacific Northwest (Portland State University). A lifelong resident of the region, Doug enjoys a good yarn, the more bizarre and unbecoming the better, especially when they are true!

I moved here to Portland in 2015 to open a tourist destination adjacent to the Moda Center. A regular tour for visitors would be excellent.

We’ve only talked about doing a tunnel tour for the past 6 years since we moved here – but between a busy chef schedule and 2 babies, we haven’t done it! Perfect way to celebrate with my baby daddy! (And grandpa can babysit! ) #winwin #fathersandgranfathers

Grandpa was a logger for Weyerhouser in Douglas county for 2 decades, followed that with 2 decades as a machinist on oil rigs on the northern Alaskan shelf, send us on the skullduggery tour!

  24. Tama Tochihara June 12, 2018 at 7:53 am #

Two winners on this tour! I am a historian, always pulling my husband to events like this and my husband has been trying to pull me to Mary’s for our entire marriage. This tour would be a treat for me and to end at Mary’s would be the Father’s Day jackpot for him!

  25. Rob Joseph June 12, 2018 at 1:04 pm #

I have lived in Portland for over 29 years. I love Portland and love learning of Portland’s history, even if it is an alarmingly racist one.

  26. Adam June 12, 2018 at 1:48 pm #

Id love to take a friend on this tour with me!

  27. Aleks June 13, 2018 at 7:56 am #

  28. Brian June 14, 2018 at 9:18 am #

My wife and I moved here from Utah 7 years ago and have loved our time here. In Utah we went on several tours which are drastically different from this, so doing a tour of Portland centered around these themes could be quite entertaining and certainly different from what we saw in Utah. Who doesn’t enjoy a little change?!

  29. Amanda Bonser June 14, 2018 at 3:37 pm #

I would like to give this to my daughter and her dad! My daughter just recently turned 21, they would have a blast!

  30. Liberty Miller June 14, 2018 at 3:54 pm #

How fun is this! My Dad would be all over this for fathers day. Lets do it!

  31. John Lockwood June 14, 2018 at 5:00 pm #

This would be cool. Fingers crossed

  33. Leisha Smith June 14, 2018 at 9:39 pm #

    I’m ready….!

  34. Laura June 14, 2018 at 11:48 pm #

    Me, me!

  35. Bri April 27, 2019 at 5:12 pm #

I’d love to win tickets for my Dad- who is visiting from Maine that day! He is a total history and politics buff and this would be so fun to teach him some fascinating things about where I live now. I’d really like to spend this time with my Dad!

  36. Tanya June 5, 2019 at 4:26 am #
