During the 1980s, John served as Chief Operating Officer and Vice Chairman of McCaw Cellular, which became the largest wireless operator in the US. In the late 1980s, John began acquiring rural wireless properties with partners Mikal Thomsen and Terry Gillespie. These properties, along with other merged entities, formed Western Wireless Corporation, which John led as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer through 2005. He also served as chairman and CEO of VoiceStream Wireless, which was spun out of Western Wireless and eventually acquired by Deutsche Telecom in 2001 and renamed T-Mobile USA. Most recently, John served as a director, Chairman and interim CEO of Clearwire Corporation.

In April 2016, Stanton was appointed as the new CEO of the Seattle Mariners organization, where he was the minority owner. Major League Baseball formally approved the sale of the Mariners to Stanton in August of that year.

John is Chairman of Trilogy International Partners. John also serves on the board of directors of Microsoft Corporation, Columbia Sportswear Co. and GameChanger Media, a Trilogy portfolio company.

In the last decade, John has chaired or co-chaired the Business Partnership for Early Learning, the United Way of King County campaign, the Washington Roundtable and the Regional Transportation Commission. He currently serves as the Chairman of Year Up of Puget Sound, a trustee of Whitman College and a director of the Seattle Foundation.

John received his BA in political science from Whitman College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. John and his wife Terry Gillespie have two sons.

Hear the full story and meet the owner of the Mariners on the 18th!

This would be fabulous to attend! I’m very impressed with John’s bio including his association with the Seattle Mariners. He’s very accomplished and someone I would enjoy seeing as a Speaker. He has his MBA and this coupled with the fact that he’s on the Board of Directors with some of the largest organizations in the Pacific Northwest (Microsoft Corporation, Columbia Sportswear) makes for an exciting presenter. Thank you in advance for considering me!

I had met John Stanton, great guy!, when he was a member of the Sonics ownership group that was led by Howard Schultz at the Key Arena. I had visited Seattle for 2 years and landed a beverage/beer gig at the Key Arena.
