  50. Josh Knapton June 14, 2017 at 10:10 pm #

I reckon it all started with the rats, the raggedy man with the glittering, steel grey eye murmured a bit too loudly over the bar. A sudden, respectful hush came down over the crowd as the primal instinct kicked in. Oh, yes. The tension, the mounting anticipation of a /story/ swept through the place and held everything and I mean Everything in thrall, helpless to but listen. The old man chuckled to himself, barely noticing the effect his simple words had upon the crowd, and shook his head as if to clear it of the melancholy of memory, a momentary malaise that fixed itself in shot order with a sip of the glass of whiskey he held in his imperceptibly shaking hand.

“Yessir,” he continued on. “The rats what lived in the walls, gorging themselves on fiberglass insulation and gnawing at the thin veneer of that which we take for granted in our lives, our homes, our everything.”

“And we could /hear/ them, chittering away with gleeful madness as they chewed up our precious things and (beggin’ yer pardons, folks) shittin’ out the detritus of our dreams turned to blackened shriveled husks of toxic death on the floors, spittin’ up mold and coughing the black lung into the air before dying so their babies can have an extra feast of the worms don’t get to ’em first.”

He paused and looked around the room for the first time, momentarily expressing confusion and surprise as it registered that his whiskey had run out a few sips ago.

“I seem to have forgotten what I was talking about, he murmured to the empty chair next to him at the bar. At the sound of a crinkled dollar bill unfolded from a pocket, a quick splash from a bottle from under the counter into a fresh cup, paid for by the nearest kind stranger who stood nearby and knew instinctively that this tale must be told. After all, this gentleman could die that very night. Then what of the tellers of tales, the dreamers of dreams, and the imbibers of spirits, rife wth flavors hedonistic and pleasures soporific, as if infused by the flowers of Baudelaire himself as Somewhere, a viola sang madly into the moonless black night and the unnerving sound, the unholy gnAwi g and chittering of the rats in the walls could be kept at bay one night longer. Just one more night of sanity, one more night of pleasure.

This is why I would love to win, or be given a few tickets to this event so I can afford to jeep the rats in my head quiet just a little while longer.. ahh, a night or two more. The festival must be attended, the old stories must be told.

Have pity, friends. And a few drink tickets and the price of admission for one such as I will be met with the gratitude of the gods themselves.:) Thank you, and this is my entry post. :D
