People and pets are lining up for this year’s Walk/Run for the Animals on May 6. The fundraising event, organized by the Humane Society for Southwest Washington (HSSW), lets people and their dogs participate in a chip-timed 5K run, or a 3-mile walk to raise money for shelter animals. In addition to helping HSSW animals receive healing, training, and medical services, Walk/Run participants can earn prizes and party in the park.
This year, cat lovers take center stage with a live performance by iAmMoshow, the Cat Rapper. A viral social media star, iAmMoshow spreads positivity and love for cats and cat people from all walks of life.
Not to be outdone, approximately 800 dogs will be on parade at Esther Short Park during the fundraising event. “Many of the dogs who come with their families were adopted from HSSW, so it feels like a family reunion,” remarks Denise Barr, VP of Marketing at the Humane Society for Southwest Washington. “They can walk or run on-leash with their owners, show off in our pet trick competition, and watch professional dogs and handlers zip through an agility course with obstacles, then try it with their owners.”
Raise everyone’s spirits
Anyone can join one of the fundraising teams, start their own, and/or make an online donation until Saturday, May 6 at 9 a.m. (the day of the event). Fundraisers who collect donations of $30 or more score a fabulous super-soft T-shirt – and just $30 helps HSSW purchase 40 jars of baby food to feed orphan kittens.
Participants get a special treat for crossing the finish line, and walkers or runners age 21+ can enjoy two handcrafted brews at the Ghost Runners Brewery beer garden as part of their registration. Registration also includes an event bag with goodies for people and pets, and an “I’m Loved” pet medal for cats or dogs. Registration is available for the event is available at hssw.org/walk-run
Everyone can browse 40+ pet-friendly businesses in the Vendor Village and party in the park until noon. Come join the fun and make a difference in the lives of animals on their way to their forever home!
The Walk/Run takes place on Saturday, May 6, at Esther Short Park in the heart of downtown Vancouver. Runners and walkers will depart in waves to accommodate what is expected to be large numbers of participants. Registration for the event is now available at hssw.org/walk-run.
The Annual Walk/Run for the Animals is funded in part by the Thomas A. Plein Foundation, Riverview Community Bank, Waste Connections, Main Event Sports Grill, Café Yumm!, Columbia River Veterinary Specialists, Mud Bay, VCA, Leonardo’s Pizzeria, Allied Fastening Supply, Inc., Miller Nash Graham & Dunn, A Dog’s Best Friend and Ghost Runners Brewery with additional support from the PetCo Foundation.
