Say goodbye to 2016 w/ salsa dance!

Melao, the Spanish word for molasses, is a group of talented Portland musicians who come together to share the beauty and exuberance of traditional Cuban Salsa music. Just as molasses is transformed into one of the oldest spirits of the world, rum, Melao transforms elements of Afro-Cuban and Spanish music into vibrant, danceable music that lifts your spirit and brings joy to your heart.

Musicians of Melao de Cuba Salsa Orchestra

  • Virginia Lopez, lead vocals
  • Art Alexander, piano
  • Bryan Hopkins, bass
  • Jay Machamer, congas
  • Jackson Coffey, timbales
  • Samuel Eisen-Meyer, electric guitar
  • Mieke Bruggeman-Smith, baritone sax, vocal, flute
  • Chris Nakato, trombone
  • Levis Dragulin, trumpet

$25 cover includes dance lesson at 9pm, champagne at midnight, and live salsa orchestra until 1am!

Thank you so much for your support of live Cuban music!

My boyfriend and I first fell in love learning to salsa dance, about three years ago. I didn’t know how to let a man lead and he didn’t know how to lead! Salsa dance taught us so much about each other and we would love to ring in the new year revisiting the rock-step with an amazing salsa orchestra, like Melao de Cuba!

  23. Marlene December 18, 2016 at 9:03 pm #

Have been wanting to salza for years and 2017 is going to be the year we learn!! First New Year with my sweetie and we are seniors looking for a fun, joyful way to celebrate! Viva la salza!

I would love to win tickets to this! My husband and I have been talking about how we need to learn to dance, but it’s impossible to get him motivated to learn with me. Free tickets would be the perfect way to get him on his feet, and dancing with me! He wouldn’t be able to say no! Haha :)

Cuz it’s the coolest venue in Portland!

  39. McKenzie December 22, 2016 at 1:05 pm #

Would love to send my parents on a night out in Portland! My mom has always wanted to learn to Salsa and it would be fun to see them enjoy themselves on the dance floor! They haven’t gone out or rung in a New Year since my siblings and I were little. Sending them into Portland for a night of dancing and great music would give 2016 a happy ending.

  48. Vada Dunford December 25, 2016 at 5:20 pm #

Because both my friend and I have sacrificed a ton and work hard to run our own separate small businesses. With all the money we put into our SB and all the time away from social fun, we could totally use a really good night out. And what better way than to dance our way into the New Year with you all!

  49. Jon Cole December 25, 2016 at 8:38 pm #

Salsa, champagne and being at the awesome Mississippi Pub for NYE! Hell yes sign me up!

  51. Anissa December 26, 2016 at 8:50 am #

My partner and I have been apart for the past four months ( work took me to MA, she stayed behind). So this would be the perfect reunion for us!
    Happy New Years!!

I absolutely love Virginia’s group! I plan to dance a lot more in 2017 and think this would be a wonderful way to both kick off the new year and encourage a girlfriend of mine to let loose and do the same! We love salsa and could use a night of fun to shake off some of the challenges of 2016.

  56. Kelly December 27, 2016 at 1:00 pm #

I have always wanted to learn to Salsa dance!

  57. Karina A. December 27, 2016 at 1:13 pm #

I just graduated college and have been focused on working as much as possible; it would be great to get out for the night and do one of my favorite activities- dancing! Also, I have been binge watching Jane the Virgin, and it has me in a real salsa dancing mood lately.

  58. Virginia Lopez December 27, 2016 at 4:17 pm #
