The Spirit of Youth
September 24-25, 2016
$30 Adults, $25 Seniors
The first concert of PCO’s 70th season celebrates the constantly evolving, ever changing, and yet forever optimistic spirit of youth.
Sharing the gifts of three remarkable teenagers, pianist Raley Schweinfurth, filmmaker Marina Labossier and thirteen year old Anne Frank and her tragic personal diary, portrayed by soprano Ani Maldjian, offers an unparalleled opportunity to make a profound statement in a powerful event that delivers a poignant and meaningful message to the community.
Concerto No. 1 IN C Minor for Piano, Trumpet and Strings….Dmitri Shostakovich Raley Schweinfurth, Piano
In the words of noted Shostakovich authority, Elizabeth Wilson, the “circus-world” evoked in this piano concerto returns each time with a vengeance as Shostakovich, “manifests the daring and high spirits of youth”.
16 year old Pianist Raley Schweinfurth premieres with the PCO. She is a student of eminent piano pedagogue, Dorothy Fahlman, one of Portland’s most distinguished teachers. Raley has been the principal pianist for the Portland Youth Philharmonic since 2014. She also performs on the harpsichord, celesta, and pipe organ.
Little Red Shoes………….Marina Labossier (Filmmaker) A short silent movie.
The Diary of Anne Frank…………………Grigory Frid
Anii Maldjian, soprano
Frid’s musical interpretation uses the literal text of Anne Frank. This dramatic and powerful one act chamber opera-monodrama, is comprised of a series of chapters or so called “entries” from her journal. It takes the listener through a two year span of life that demonstrates how many children, fraught with adversity, can grow up so quickly to become mature human beings.
Ms. Maldjian is largely known for her portrayal as Anne in The Diary of Anne Frank, a one-woman opera, and comes into her own in this solo work. The vocal writing fits the words of Anne Frank’s diary closely and offers a technical and emotional tour de force for this game soprano.
Performance dates and times are as follows:
- 7:30 p.m. Sept. 24, 2016 Nordia House, 8800 SW Oleson Rd., Portland
