The Wilderness is Explosions In The Sky’s sixth album, and first non-soundtrack release since 2011’s Take Care, Take Care, Take Care. True to its title, The Wilderness explores the infinite unknown, utilizing several of the band’s own definitions of “space” (outer space, mental space, physical geography of space) as compositional tools. The band uses their gift for dynamics and texture in new and unique ways rather than intuitively fill those empty spaces, they shine a light into them to illuminate all the colors of the dark. From the electronic textures of the opening track to the ambient dissolve of closer “Landing Cliffs,” The Wilderness is an aggressively modern and forward-thinking work-one that wouldn’t seem the slightest bit out of place on a shelf between original pressings of Meddle and Obscured By Clouds.

The first EITS album not produced entirely by the band, The Wilderness finds them working with long time collaborator (and Grammy-winning producer) John Congleton in a co-producer role for the first time, and the band’s most ambitious songs to date branch into unexpected new dimensions accordingly: “Logic Of A Dream” lives up to its name, its celestial symphonic swells overcome by relentless tribal drum patterns that dissolve into a gentle Krautrock outro. The cacophonous washes that open “Disintegration Anxiety” resolve into a locked groove marking a rock solid midpoint of the journey, followed by a deconstructed ambient soundscape “Losing The Light.” “Colors In Space” is particularly beautiful and brave, cycling through sublime atmospherics and motorik drive before building to a whiplash-inducing halt.

Arguably the most progressive instrumental rock album since The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place, The Wilderness is a bold, experimental work combining the EITS song craft that has sold hundreds of thousands of albums and tickets with the cinematic sensibility that has elevated the band to the level of regard and demand they enjoy as film composers. It is an album where shoegaze, electronic experimentation, punk damaged dub, noise, and ambient folk somehow coexist without a hint of contrivance-and cohere into some of the most memorable and listenable moments of the bands expansive body of work-“proper” studio albums and major motion picture soundtracks alike.

The progressive ambience of early Peter Gabriel, the triumphant romanticism of The Cure in their prime, and the more melancholy moments of Fleetwood Mac all inform the curious beauty of The Wilderness. The uncanny ability to reconcile the tension between discordant, nightmarish cacophony and laid-back, Laurel Canyoninspired folk-rock is a cornerstone of this album, and the center of Explosions In The Sky’s remarkable evolution. If The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place was the defining album of Explosions In The Sky’s career, The Wilderness is the band’s [re] defining album.

Explosions In The Sky is: Chris Hrasky (drums), Michael James (guitar, bass), Munaf Rayani (guitar), Mark T. Smith (guitar).

Preoccupations
The band formerly known as Viet Cong have today announced their new name, moving forward they will be called ‘Preoccupations’.

In a statement released today they said “After finishing our latest record and taking some time off, we are excited to announce that we will be performing and recording as “Preoccupations” going forward. We will be previewing new material from a forthcoming record in a series of festivals and shows in North America and Europe in the coming months. We apologize to those who were adversely affected by our former band name. This was never anticipated nor our intent. We are artists and not politicians, we understand that the name reflected pain to some individuals and we are happy to change it and move on and focus on our music. Thanks to all our friends and fans. See you all soon.”

Preoccupations have been hard at work recording their new album which will be released this fall. The band will be playing a series of summer festivals including FYF and Sasquatch and are expected to debut some of the new material at these shows. All tour dates are listed below.

I have heard that EITS put on an amazing show. I have never seen them. I have several friends going to this show and I was disappointed that I could not afford to go. They are driving down from Seattle to see it. On a more personal level, this is a really hard week. I have to bury my grandfather on Thursday and a show sounds like a good thing to do to get my mind cleared out.

I would like to see Explosions In The Sky so I could relive some of my favorite moments from Friday Night Lights. Ya see, I’m not from Texas, nor did I play high school football, but that doesn’t mean I let go of that dream. A dream I still hold dear. A dream of which I’ll never let go.

Explosions in the sky is one of the first bands that taught me what real music is and what it is like to be emotionally impacted by it. I’d love the chance to see them bring their songs to life. It’s an opportunity I’ve never had and something has weirdly always stood in the way. Boyfriend and I, together for 8 years now, have always been connected to this band and one of our first encounters involved the earth is not a cold dead place. We’ve grown together so much since then–still listening to them everyday. Somehow their music always brings us back but also makes us feel that were exactly where we’re supposed to be. Ahh, I’d really be so sincerely thankful for this beautiful experience. It’d be pretty epic.

I saw them open for NIN a couple of years ago! Awesome band, and Congleton created a whole new voice for their genius. And, the Preoccupations will be fun to see again under a new name.

An Explosions in the Sky inspired poem for PDX Pipeline:

    “Your Hand in Mine”
“Remember Me as a Time of Day”
    “Time Stops”
“The Birth and Death of the Day”

    “How Strange, Innocence”
“Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever”

“All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone”
    “So Long, Lonesome”
    “First Breath After Coma”
    “Losing the Light”
    “Welcome, Ghosts”

Sad the sunshine is gone and the hot temps!

This show would take my mind off of my severe sadness & depression. Or any fun event
you are planning THIS WEEKEND. I would love to go

    Pretty please pick us.

This has felt like the longest week ever, and I just want to curl up into a ball and listen to the soothing sounds of Explosions, while getting stepped on by 15 year olds at the Crystal.
