Jesus Christ Superstar, the spectacular musical by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, will open July 21st at Post 5 Theatre in Sellwood. It’s been over twenty years since this show has been produced theatrically with a professional cast in Portland. This production will be like none you’ve ever seen. With musical direction by Matt Insley, this show features the talents of Ernie Lijoi, Ithica Tell, Jessica Tidd, and many more. Following the critically acclaimed and audience revered The Rape of Lucrece, this is yet another collaboration between Streeter, Insley, and Tidd.
Jesus Christ Superstar is a rock opera that tells the story of Jesus from Judas’ point of view. This production will explore the relationship between Jesus and Mary in a way never before depicted. Energetic, powerful, and a rockin’ musical, it has at its center a religious leader who is a social and political rebel. Jesus Christ’s meteoric rise in renown provides, as the title suggests, a parallel to contemporary celebrity worship. Jesus begins to believe the hype. As Christ’s teachings are embraced, Judas increasingly questions the enlightened motives of this new prophet, resulting in betrayal. Christ’s final days are dramatized with emotional intensity, thought-provoking edge, and explosive theatricality. Propelled by a stirring score, by turns driving and majestic, satirical and tender, Jesus Christ Superstar illuminates the transcendent power of the human spirit with a passion that goes straight to the heart. This will be an inspiring and compelling evening of theater. The show has violent content and is not recommended for children.
The show runs Thursdays through Sundays from July 21st to August 20th at Post5 Theater in Sellwood. All performances are at 8PM. The show runs about two hours including a fifteen-minute intermission.
