A bona fide guitar hero and perennial poll-winner, Al Di Meola has been recognized internationally over the past four decades as virtuoso of the highest order. A prolific composer and prodigious six-string talent, Di Meola has amassed over 20 albums as a leader while collaborating on a dozen or so others with the likes of the fusion supergroup Return To Forever (with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White), the celebrated acoustic guitar trio featuring fellow virtuosos John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia, and the Rite of Strings trio with bassist Clarke and violinist Jean-Luc Ponty. And while his dazzling technique on both acoustic and electric guitars has afforded him regal status among the hordes of fretboard aficionados who regularly flock to his concerts, the depth of Di Meola’s writing along with the soulfulness and his inherent lyricism of his guitaristic expression have won him legions of fans worldwide beyond the guitar aficionado set.

A pioneer of blending world music and jazz, going back to early Latin-tinged fusion outings like 1976’s Land of the Midnight Sun, 1977’s Elegant Gypsy and 1978’s Casino, the guitar great continues to explore the rich influence of flamenco, tango, Middle Eastern, Brazilian and African music with his World Sinfonia, an ambitious pan-global group that he formed in 1991. Their exhilarating world music fusion has been documented on such releases as 2000’s The Grande Passion (featuring the Toronto Symphony Orchestra), 2007’s Live in London, 2011’s Pursuit of Radical Rhapsody and the stunning 2012 DVD, Morocco Fantasia (recorded at the Mawazine Festival in Rabat, Morocco and featuring special guests Said Chraibi on oud, Abdellah Meri on violin and Tari Ben Ali on percussion).

The first time I missed an Al Di Meola concert was when I was 16. I got my ticket but I fell sick. Later in my 20s I got a ticket but couldn’t attend for work reasons. I don’t want to miss this one!

I have loved Al Di Meola since a friend played “Race With Devil On Spanish Highway” for me years ago. To be able to see him in such an intimate setting like Aladdin Theater would be spectacular and i would love to win those tickets.

Long before there was a game by the name of ‘Guitar Hero’, there was Al along with John and Paco who are and were the true legends of that moniker. Friday Night in San Francisco will stand as one of the best live recording releases of all time. This is a tour stop for Al that Portland is very lucky to have.

We all know that jazz is so much more complicated than rock and roll or blues. It is played like every note counts. I love jazz for that reason. It is intricate and offers so much more than any
    other music!

It would be an honor for my husband and I to attend this event and we both have
been to many shows at the Alladin Theater but not for a while so It would also be great to see
    the venue again.

This artist has performed and / or recorded with the greats, like John McLaughlin and Chick Corea just naming a few. I would love the opportunity to meet him too.

I hope we are chosen for this very special night out. It also marks the beginning of Portland’s Summer concerts.

  25. Sharon Monteiro June 5, 2016 at 6:03 am #

VERY impressive resume! Nothing like a SIX STRING and I would love to have the chance to enjoy hearing his music.

Pssst… time to get correctly cool, and non-offensive, and change the word Gypsy to Romani.

  26. Laura June 5, 2016 at 10:02 pm #

Yes, yes! Shredding. By the best award-winning jazz musician.
But that acoustic sound of Elegant Gypsy defines sexy.
So … if I win tickets I’ll slip into my LBD, or maybe my little voluptuous strawberry sundress, put on my cherry lipstick and my best red high heels; grab a chilled bottle of my favorite pinot gris, appropriately called Summer In A Bottle, and show up at my favorite man’s porch to say Let’s go hear Al Di Meola.

I want to see Al Di Meola because he is simply one of the best guitarists ever. I was a metal head as a teen and was in to great rock players like Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai and Randy Rhoads but when i heard Al Di Meola for the first time it was mind blowing. He turned me on to jazz and i have been a huge fan ever since. Would love to see this guitar master live in concert.
