A singer, composer and actor, Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums over three decades. Coupled with his gift for storytelling, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of Americana, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues in a convention-defying manner that breaks down barriers. Whether touring as a ‘Duo’ or with his ‘Acoustic Group’ or ‘The Large Band’, Lovett’s live performances show not only the breadth of this Texas legend’s deep talents, but also the diversity of his influences, making him one of the most compelling and captivating musicians in popular music. Since his self-titled debut in 1986, Lyle Lovett has evolved into one of music’s most vibrant and iconic performers. Among his many accolades, besides the four Grammy Awards, he was given the Americana Music Association’s inaugural Trailblazer Award, and was named Texas State Musician. His works, rich and eclectic, are some of the most beloved of any living artist working today.

Oregon Zoo Summer Concerts are presented by the Oregon College Savings Plan and Banfield Pet Hospital.

I saw Lyle introduced in Washington DC long long ago by a gorgeous redhead – couldn’t quite tell who she was as we were sitting far from the stage. When – Julia Roberts – introduced her HUSBAND Lyle Lovett – I was crushed – as I have always had a crush on Lyle. Hard to compete with Julia – alas the marriage ended but they remain great pals. I have loved Lyle and his music for 30+ years and its been about that long since I last saw him.. His music, style and delivery are timeless – I hope I get to see him again as the winner of this contest. It would be my summer highlight.

I am disabled and have struggled for years with several issues, including what the medical wizards have labeled “Major Panic Disorder with Agoraphobia.” In simple terms, it means you freak out about a lot of things and you usually have an extremely difficult time leaving your home or being in places you feel are over occupied or difficult to escape. At one point, didn’t leave my home for about six months.

Physically speaking, only months ago, I could not complete a full day out of a wheelchair due to a series of other non-diagnosed concerns. I didn’t get the mail, shopped only in the middle of the night, and would occasionally take a brief walk around our Portland neighborhood at the early, early hours of the morning to avoid others. I must confess how embarrassing this is, especially as an adult male, and I’ve never publically told anyone about this disability until now.

God graciously brought my sweetheart, Suzie (that’s what I call her) into my life just over four years ago. Shortly after dating, my health took a severe turn for the worse and I was basically bed ridden for more than four months. It was Suzy who stayed by my side each and every day, cooking, cleaning, paying the bills, shopping, and basically loving a person who really wasn’t adding a lot of value to her life at the time.

Suzie continued to lovingly and carefully pursue me, patiently working with me through my litany of health concerns and the issues which we all have to face in past disappointments which life always seems to eventually serve to us all equally.

To say I was hesitant to allow Suzie’s love to break through my damaged heart would be an understatement. Just one year before meeting me, my Suzie lost her mother and the matriarch of her family to breast cancer. Then only six months later, her favorite brother died unexpectedly in his bedroom. I feared greatly that if I relented and loved Suzie back in the way she loved me, I would one day be looking down on her tears at another loved one who was taken from her life prematurely.

    But Suzie didn’t give up.

    She didn’t give in.

    She didn’t relent.

She continued to methodically love me setting up doctor’s appointments, placing me on dietary supplement regimens, and making sure each day I took a baby step forward in my progression in what we both will ultimately be full health, in mind, body, and spirit.

Today, just over four years later, I haven’t been in my wheelchair for months. Suzy does the driving, but I can say with her by my side, I have been able to navigate around in public once again, and have even enjoyed some fun events out, just like a person without any disabilities.

And I’ve been accepted into graduate school! I can go, because Suzie promises she will be by my side each day of class until I feel like I could attend on my own, should I ever choose to attend alone.

Just a few months ago, I asked Suzie to marry me. I proposed to her on top of a mountaintop at a camp I attended as a child. This was the most magical and meaningful place I could think of. After all, this camp had changed my life, and I hoped once again it would have the same outcome.

She said, “Yes.” Suzie said yes! She said the word which made my heart once again begin to breathe.

I gathered up all the money I could to purchase her the most beautiful wedding ring I could afford. She certainly deserves much more, but was so kind and gracious in her acceptance of this pauper’s token of love which I placed on her finger.

Sorry for the long comment, but here’s why I wrote. The wedding is coming up soon, just after this event and then we have to immediately pack up and move out of state for graduate school. We will both miss our beautiful Portland, but I believe this is something I must do to try to create a life for my dear, sweet, Suzie that she deserves, especially after everything she has done for me.

While we wanted to have the dream wedding of the royals, we’ve had to really, really scale things down to her Dad’s backyard. It will be super classy—all our family and friends are coming and I know we’ll have a great time eating, dancing, laughing, and sharing our newfound hopes for the future.

Traditionally, I know the groom is supposed to offer the bride an engagement present and sometimes a gift at the rehearsal dinner. Well, I haven’t done that yet, and with the move imminent, these gifts are going to be tough.

I was online and saw these tickets were being given away and thought this might be a nice gift for my bride to say thank you to her and let her know I wish I had more to offer her, as she has given up so much for me.

I could also tell you about a lot of rough times we’ve been through recently, like our home was broken into and robbed by drug addicts for more than the fourth full time and we lost everything basically accrued over our lifetime. However, I don’t want to focus on the negatives. Rather, I choose to, and I hope you will, focus on the gift I have been given . . . a princess for a lifetime to an undeserving frog. Hopefully, one day her love will help me transform into the prince I hope to become for our future together.

And while there are many more deserving people of these tickets than myself, you will find no one else more deserving than my lovely Suzie.

    Thank you for your consideration.

It’s my 2nd year in Oregon and I would love to bring a friend to see Kyle and be able to visit the zoo and see fireworks all at the same time. I’m 58 and would love to have a great memory such as this to remember!
