Life is a Carnival! Portland’s annual Mardi Gras Ball has been listed by the New Orleans Times-Picayune as one of the Top-5 most authentic Mardi Gras celebrations in the United States outside of Louisiana. And it’s no surprise given the event’s origins – produced since 2010 by the Mysti Krewe of Nimbus – a NOLA-style social club founded by Louisiana expatriates that now counts more than 100 members in Portland. This is no half-hearted plastic bead and powdered hurricane mix party, this is a critical mass of Louisiana revelry with full costume finery – the crazy, the macabre, the funny, the sexy, the rude – and high-spirited indulgence. Last year’s event at the Wonder Ballroom sold out weeks before the date so guests are highly encouraged to buy tickets in advance.

This year’s musical acts will include the Bridgetown Sextet; the Too Loose Cajun and Zydeco Band; and a PDX All-Star Tribute to the late, great Allen Toussaint featuring dozens of the PDX indie, Americana, folk, blues, and jazz artists who perform in the yearly critically-acclaimed Next Waltz concert.

There will be a costume contest with great prizes and the crowning of the Mardi Gras King and Queen with free traditional king cake distributed to the crowd.

I would love to go, mostly to have a piece of home this year! My family is originally from Louisiana, my husband is from from Portland and I was raised between both. In 2008 we relocated back to NOLA for almost 6 years, and moved back 18 months ago. This time of the year I get really homesick. so do my Cajun children. (We cant wait for the parade!) I love Mardi Gras more than Christmas. This ball would make my carnival season! And I’ll bring beads for everyone! oh Please! THROW ME SOMETHIN MISTER!!!!

  10. Laura February 2, 2016 at 9:34 am #

Being born and raised in New Orleans, I thought every kid had a week off school for Mardi Gras. I thought all adults were allowed a season to celebrate that they were all just kids at heart.

I miss how MG changes the pulse of the city, and how its people become submissive to the joy of a marching band pounding underneath their feet.

I’ll always love New Orleans, but Portland has my heart for now. I’d love an opportunity to witness this marriage between my two favorite cities.

  11. Allie Callow February 2, 2016 at 9:48 am #

Love New Orleans. I grew up on the West Coast but my first words for water was Bayou. I have a deep connection to NOLA. Cant wait to attend and return to my second home. Building my costume now.

As a Louisiana expat, I like to find any excuse throw glitter and sequins all over my bod and dance like a dang ol’ crazy lady!
~*Mardi Gras*~… there is no better excuse for glitter-sequin-crazy dancing.

I lived in St. Louis, MO for seven years. St. Louis is the only city in the United States that has a Mardi Gras celebration that rivals that of New Orleans. That celebration is is complete with beads, music, dancing, food, and debauchery. What makes the St. Louis Mardi Gras stand out compared to the original NOLA version is the fact that St. Louisans do all of this in complete defiance of the bitter cold that grips St. Louis during February of each year. Patagonia jackets may get in the way of body baring, but nothing gets in the way of the unbridled joy that many midwesterners are about to feel.

Seeing the St. Louis experience piqued my interest in how other cities across the country took the Mardi Gras tradition, embraced it, and made it their own. As a newly-minted Pacific Northwesterner and aspiring dapper dude, I know that attending Portland’s Mardi Gras will be not only a blast, but also an important step in cementing local tradition. Hopefully, that blast can handle the costumed aplomb that I’d bring to the table!

  29. Shawna Peterson February 3, 2016 at 12:20 pm #

Please please please it’s my birthday that day!!! Thank you

  49. Kenny Poulson February 4, 2016 at 4:30 pm #

I was born and raised in Portland. This is and always will be my home. But I did spend 6 years in South Louisiana. I raised my kids there, learned a trade, and celebrated many Mardi Gras holiday events. Mardi Gras is by far the biggest thing I miss from living there (then, of corse, the food.) Some things can only be done in New Orleans and some of the surrounding cities, but it would make my year, my family’s year, to experience a Portland style Mardi Gras and remember how it felt to care about nothing in the world other than dressing like its Halloween, catching something awesome from somebody on a crazy cool float, and having the time of my life with my Northwest neighbors.

  50. Linda M. February 4, 2016 at 4:42 pm #

I have ALWAYS wanted to attend a Mardi Gras masquerade Ball. Prior to living in Portland, I never lived anywhere that celebrated Mardi Gras quite like other places. (like Portland!) I lived in rural settings in Montana and could only admire the festivites from afar. Would love to go to New Orleans someday. Planning to attend the parade on Fat Tuesday in the Mississippi district. Love costumes (and beads) and have mine ready just in case.

  51. Kathy L. Rankin February 4, 2016 at 5:44 pm #

I want to go and see Bridgetown Sextet; the Too Loose

Cajun and Zydeco Band, dance, take photos and see all the

outrageous costumes (guess who is in the costume).

This is so cool! We can say we have our own Portland OR Mardi Gras.

It’s as close to the “real thing” as you can get and not

have to leave the city. Beads, spicy food, energetic audience, good music

good times. I hope I win tickets.

  52. Muddy February 4, 2016 at 6:32 pm #

Nobody wants these tickets as much as we do. Thanks.

  53. James February 4, 2016 at 7:35 pm #
