Portland’s legendary garage-punk trio Dead Moon, fronted by the husband-wife team of Fred and Toody Cole, conjures images of hard-luck easy riders and lovers against the world. While their sound alternates between moody and aggressive, it is always remarkably genuine and energetic.

Fred began his enduring musical career at the very young age of 15. Many years and many bands later (after living through experiences as varied as homesteading in Alaska, dodging the Vietnam War draft, and hunting bears), the two formed a punk band called the Rats. Later, after adding Andrew Loomis on drums, Dead Moon was formed in 1987.

For almost a decade, Dead Moon released LPs on their own Tombstone label. All of those releases are vinyl-only and were cut on the same lathe that the Kingsmen’s version of “Louie Louie” was cut on back in 1963. In 1991, they began to re-release the vinyl-only albums onto CD through Music Maniac in Europe and eMpTy in the United States, an effort that continued into the new millennium. Sub Pop released the retrospective Echoes of the Past, a collection of Dead Moon songs handpicked by Fred Cole, in 2006.

Because the last time I went to a Long Knife show, I wrote a short story in the mosh pit … and got it published.

I would love to see Dead Moon again – I’m a huge fan of this band and also Jenny Don’t and the Spurs…Have only seen Don’t in video clipsand looking to be inspired by Don’ts energy, in person. Curious about Long Knife too :-)

  24. Aaron December 24, 2015 at 4:44 pm #

Where else are you going to see this many legends in one spot!Thats why!

  25. Antti Kai December 24, 2015 at 6:22 pm #

Dead Moon is my all time favourite band but I’ve never seen them and Long Knife is my 2015 favourite band that I discovered. And my lifetimedream is to go to Portland. Probably I will go very soon, in two years, somehow.

  26. Mark Sage December 24, 2015 at 7:11 pm #

Since the days of Captain Whizeagles, Fred & Toody have been a mainstay of the Portland music scene. Add in the supporting act of Don’t featuring the soaring voice of Jenny Don’t coupled with life long drummer extratrodinnare Sam Henry, this a show to see. In fact, I will drive from Seattle to the venue of my teenage years, The Crystal Ballroom, to attend this event. You’ve got to pick me!

  27. Lloyd Lea December 24, 2015 at 8:56 pm #

Music is family and this should not be missed

  28. Hollie Temple December 25, 2015 at 7:55 am #

Played with Dead Moon in the 80’s in Eugene. My husband played with them also. Fred and Toody are the ultimate couple!! They are humble. I love them so much!! Love to Andrew also. XXO! Aaron and Hollie Temple

  29. Melissa D December 25, 2015 at 8:46 am #

I’d love to see them, never have before and never have money to get us tickets before they’re gone

  30. Tiah December 25, 2015 at 10:55 am #

I’m hoping to attend this show regardless (holy smokes! Is it sold out?*worries*) but winning tickets would be super amazing as I’ve lost a lot of work over the holidays. I want to go because:
    B) I’ve been listening to Dead Moon since high school and they are one of the few local bands who have stayed together this long and still rock. I do not anticipate them charging $100+ to play in Tacoma ever. They are rock legends of the people!
    C) Don’t is a really fun band to see live but I somehow have only seen them once (at Sandy Hut). I love Jenny’s vocals and everybody knows Sam Henry is the top drummer in town.
D)Long Knife is also great to see live but I’ve also only seen them once, with Danava, at Black Water. It would be awesome to hear them really really loud. Like, REALLY LOUD.
All that said, if someone who’s never seen these bands before who can’t afford tix can win I’d rather they win because DM hardly plays anymore and everyone who likes them should see them at least once!❤

  31. Abbie Cary December 25, 2015 at 7:00 pm #

    Yes please!

  32. Matt O. Cosby December 25, 2015 at 8:19 pm #

I can’t wait to see Kelly rock it on the drums with Dead Moon. Don’t is awesome as well; they sound like the Wipers with Jenny on vocals.
But most of all… Long Knife is punk as f___!
    Love, MattC

  34. John December 26, 2015 at 7:12 pm #

Some how I didn’t even know Dead Moon was playing this week, until I just stumbled upon this post. Damn, I hope I can still get tickets, or PDXPipeline can hook me up.

  35. Jeff December 27, 2015 at 9:50 pm #
