Celebrate summer at THPRD’s fifth annual Groovin’ on the Grass, headlined by the iconic horns and urban soul of legendary 10-piece ensemble Tower of Power, and featuring Portland jazz trio Boy and Bean.

Groovin’ on the Grass will be held on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 6-8:30 pm at the HMT Recreation Complex in Beaverton. General admission tickets are only $10 in advance (doors open at 5 pm); Children under the age of 5 are free.


Since 1968, headliner Tower of Power has toured the world, earning international acclaim with its legendary horn section. The band – which boasts four founding members in Emilio Castillo, Rocco Prestia, Stephen Kupka, and David Garibaldi – has released 18 studio albums and performed with Aerosmith, Elton John, Little Feat, Phish, Santana, Heart, and hundreds of other acclaimed artists during a historic and prolific tenure spanning nearly 50 years.

Boy and Bean, the show’s featured act, delights Portland audiences with depression-era swing and jazz standards, covering artists such as Billie Holliday, Louis Armstrong, and Ella Fitzgerald, The trio – Amber Short, Luke Short and Andrew Jones – is a fixture at Portland-area venues.
Food / Drink

Beer, wine and food will be available for purchase, including craft beers from event sponsor Golden Valley Brewery. No outside alcohol is permitted, and coolers may be no larger than 22″ x 15″ x 15″).

    I remember grooving to Tower of Power when they practiced in 1974 at Berkeley High School where I went. I’d love to hear them again.

    My dad and I saw TOP when I was in high school at Seattle’s Jazz Alley. They put on such a great show, even if it did keep me up past my bed time. He’s been working so hard on my parent’s house all summer, he really deserves something fun!
